Hey that rhymes... Anyways I'm busy 'till the end of the year with my own stuff. Then someone offered me some loads going out of state. After the first of the year, I plan on getting commercial plates, and getting my own authority. I live in Nebraska, but I would like to be able to go to Colorado, South Dakota, Kansas, and Iowa. I am very confused about how to get authority to run in these states. I knew for starters I would need to get a USDOT number. So I went online and found a site usdottoday.com or some such site. I got the confirmation email the next day with my DOT number. My next contract doesn't start 'till Wednesday, so I went to the truck lettering place so I could put my DOT number on the truck. Today I got a letter saying that I need to do about 50 more steps to complete the process. I got the letter after I put the stickers on...

Talking to other people that have dealt with the legality of running trucks, they say that I need an ICC number as well. No one can tell me exactly what an ICC number is, just that I need one. So I did some internet searching as to what the two were. I thought the DOT number was for vehicles that towed over 10,000 lbs, and the ICC allowed you to do interstate commerce. However, the letter I got from DOT says "FMCSA has received your application for USDOT New Entrant registration to operate in interstate commerce."

Also how do drug tests work with an o/o? Do they send you a letter directly? I've had over half a dozen of them in the past 14 months, and it was always from the employer, so I'm curious how that works.

Final question... I had some truck sticker made (they'll be done tomorrow). It says [my name] Trucking & Farming LLC. Is there any reason why I couldn't put them on before I have commercial plates on the truck?

    Thanks in advance.

There is a lot to share....... i am a newbie to this site just like you, I think bill or some the others will take the time to type out all the info that you will need, but there is a WEALTH of knowledge, to be had on the search bar, and also, read the sticky's about being an O/O:biggrin_2558:, its all here. Your experience says 0-1 years, Is this right? Sounds like a huge leap for someone just starting out.

I guess the stereotype of truckers being rude idiots is just that.

I'll figure it the #### out myself.

Ok, I'll do it...... First of all get those numbers and letters off of your door. You are NOT authorized to put them on and truck with them yet. You will need a BOC-3 filing and a couple of others. There is a 10 day waiting period on your application for authority alone. Its all on the paperwork you should have printed when you applied. You will also need whats called a UCR card. Basically its what took place of the old Bingo card. Now. After you have done all of these things your authority is still not active yet. You will need to put insurance on the vehicle being insured. BTW this is before you even think about getting your IRP. After everything is said and done you will then need to fill out a 2290 form. Then you 0can get your IRP and as long as the FMCSA has sent you your authority then you can letter the truck. This is just a quick recap. Also if your expecting this to happen overnight your in trouble.
