Because the tax you pay on IFTA is based on the fuel you use in each state. You could get a real great deal on the pump price, because state fuel tax is lower, and cross into a state that has a higher state fuel tax and you are going to have to pay even more based on the fuel you use in that state. This is why a smart operator will see what the price for fuel is taking the pump price and subtracting the state fuel tax and that is the real price of the fuel.

For instance, Illinois almost always has a much higher pump price than Indiana. But they also have a very high state tax. And Indiana does not include the full taxation at the pump but tacks more on when IFTA is filed. In the final analysis, Illinois ACTUAL price of the fuel is usually lower than Indiana. You want to look for the lowest actual cost of fuel, minus the fuel tax, as you are going to pay the fuel tax on it based on what you use in each state.

I know it makes things more complicated than they should be, but savings thousands in the long run is worth it.
