I am fairly new to the world of trucking as this has been a recent career change for my spouse. I am not however new to the world of hiring and firing employees. I am in the Health Care Field and I am constantly amazed by how difficult it is to find quality health care workers that can pass a drug screen, have a clean work history and a clean criminal background check. I dare say for every 10 applicants we go through we might get ONE that we could and would consider putting to work. And just like drivers these are licensed professional people.
In support of my husband's new career choice I now frequently devour all the information on these boards to help learn about the trucking industry, the regulations, the ups and downs etc. And it seems almost every day I see potential employees on these boards cursing a company that didn't hire them because of something in their background or their inability to pass a drug test. Even worse I see potential employees on here trying to come up with ways to NOT GET CAUGHT.
If you are a student or recently licensed driver seeking employment let me share with you from the employer's point of view the quickest way to find yourself with gainful employment. STOP TRYING TO PULL SOMETHING OVER ON A PERSPECTIVE EMPLOYER. Trust me guys and girls, whether you are a nurse with a license or a driver with a license or a non-licensed person who simply needs to provide for your family, companies are not idiots. They will find out about your past. They will test you for drugs both legal and illegal and you will be denied employment. And in almost all cases the quickest way to get denied a job is to lie on your application.
Does that mean if you've had a troubled past that you can't get a job? No it doesn't. It means that if you will be responsible with regards to the license you hold and be upfront and honest with potential employers you will save yourself and the company a lot of money and headaches. It cost you money to seek a new job, change jobs, attend orientation etc. It cost companies thousands of dollars to run back ground checks, MVR, drug screens etc. And nothing makes me more irritated as an employer than to have wasted my time and invested my interest in a potential employee who turns out to be lying!
Having a troubled past may mean having to be more selective about the company you choose. But companies will work with you if you are honest and forthright about what they are about to find when they run your history. Stop taking illegal drugs! For God's sake whether youre a nurse or a driver you have people's lives at stake and never lie about legal prescriptions you are on either. Be prepared to prove you have a prescripton and be prepared to work with your physician on changing medications if necessary to get the job. Bot for heavens sake, just tell the truth. Your past is what it is .the past. You cant hide it, lie about or change it.
If you think you are smarter than a perspective employer .dont bother applying. And if you do ..dont go screaming to the world about how bad the company sucks when you are found out and dont get the job. Go scream in the mirror.
Thanks for the vent! I feel better now. LOL!

Well said! Honesty is always the best policy.
I dabble in graphic design, and recently did a project of brochures and a booklet that is targeted towards people that are getting out of prison or jail to help guide them in settling back into society and staying out of trouble. The brochures and booklet all stress being honest about your past, and encourage one to think about and explain what they are doing and going to do to stay out of trouble. It was a very interesting project to work on, and some of the information would be useful to others as well. -
Agreed- another one is dude or dudette- if you have a felony, you can't drive into Canada, don't tell us you can.

You may have noticed a heavy presence of Hispanic truckers at truck stops, shippers, and receivers docks. What is truly ironic, is that these people had gotten their CDL license under false pretense. If you enter this country illegally, you can legally take over someone's social security number, so long as that person is deceased. Trucking companies require Americans truckers to be honest when they apply, yet people who claim they were born and raised here in the USA, yet speak little or no English, are issued CDL license by state's who are supportive and sympathetic to illegal aliens. I had reported the practice of social security numbers (belonging to deceased people) being recycled and sold to illegal aliens to the California Highway Patrol, who investigates license fraud in California, and was told this was not in their jurisdiction. If people are fraudulantly using social security numbers that don't belong to them, then the SSA (Social Security Administration) must pursue this. The SSA does not have its own police force, so it seems illegal aliens can get away with lying, and Americans can't.
