It kind of makes sense why there seems to be a disproportionate percentage of obese truck drivers. The "independence" that is enjoyed by truckers removes the social pressures of conformity. Add the the reality of extremely long work hours, complete physically non strenuous labor and the odds increase. It's a job hazard and not enough is being done to promote healthy drivers. Dining options on the road are terrible, and things that are more healthy for you cost more money. Some trucks are equipped with refrigerators, which allows for more options for the drivers. It would be nice if more places (truck stops) had exercise facilities (24 hour fitness type places) and companies allowed more time for drivers to use these facilities it would go a long way to changing perception. Granted you'll still have obese people, but you'll afford the opportunity to those that want to exercise. It could make a difference, and might be a good benefit for a company to offer drivers.

One possible solution is to rotate drivers with both warehouse workers and loading dock workers. This way the risks of a truck driver becoming that overweight or obese are drastically reduced. Therefore, a lot more of the professional warehouse workers and loading dock workers would need to get their CDL's. The rotations, in the long run, would benefit everyone.
Also, it not be a bad idea if truck drivers would be more involved in both the physical loading and unloading of their trucks. This could also help cut down on both the overweight and obese driver. -

Trucker are fat because they choose to be, everytime you choose what you eat, or how many pounds of sugar in your coffee, sweet rolls for breakfast over eggs. It is all choice. Companies also have a choice as to whom represents them. This is not something you can sue over, If you choose to be fat then maybe I choose not to hire you.
For example I took a new driver with me on his check out run , Vernon to Dallas and back, he waddled over to the truck after spending 40 buck at dollar general in honey buns and candy tossed it on my dash. I looked at him and told him that crap is not going in my truck, get rid of it or stay here. But every time I stopped for fuel he was making a bee line for Wendy's for a shake, and fries or equivalent. True enough its his choice, but it was my choice to tell the boss he is not going to work out. When it was his turn to drive within 2 hours the truck would be stopped because he was tired. Next trip and back to unemployment... After ll i t is always somebodys choice.Last edited: Jan 28, 2013

I actually lost a few pounds one of the times I went OTR. I still ate the crappy food every couple of days, but the rest of the time was super healthy foods and tons of water. Went to Wal-Mart once a week and spent about 60 dollars. Nothing that needed cooked either. It can be done...easily. I always parked far away. Also would take off on foot and explore my surroundings. Laziness is the problem, plain and simple.
Powder Joints, skullitor and mje Thank this. -
Not All "FAT PEOPLE" have Sleep Apnea. It's just another government scam!Like that STUPID CDL BS. All about money for them. Not us drivers. Now if when you renew your CDL YOU MUST have a valid up to date medical card.So say your laid off and your medical card ran out, THEY DOWNGRADE YOU to a Car licence.
