Truck driving is not the only industry implementing this standard. Try applying for a regular job and sitting in an interview with a hiring manager. Chances are, the manager will judge by appearance first over anything else. It will not matter how well dressed you are. If someone looks good and doesn't look like the Staypuft Marshmallow Man, chances are that they will be hired over you. And then there are the healthcare costs, risks if you get hired, etc. As much as I loathe Prime, or any other large OTR carrier, they are looking out in their best interests as far as driver safety, and drivers personal health. There's really no sense in taking a risk hiring someone who looks like they might have a heart attack, stroke, etc while driving, passing out, getting killed, and possibly getting innocent motorists killed. It's all about risk, and business. If you don't like it, something or someone has to be willing to change. And I bet my pennies it's not going to be the companies who are just looking out for public safety.
Image is everything. Are you willing to change for the better?

REDD is correct. I am 5'7, 52 yrs old, and was 185 lbs, and the army said I was at 24% body fat which is the max allowed. They said I had to drop 9 lbs and get down to 176 for my age and height. And that is my Max by the way, so that I don't have to be taped! And Yes. Better get ready for the next set of reglulations which will kick in later this year or early next year. Your BMI will be used, and if your over, you will be required to do a Sleep disorder test. Basically their linking overweight to sleep disorders, which can or will cost you your CDL. And since I have lost weight, the wife says my snooring is much less! The problem is that the truck stops arn't on board with it yet. Try to find one with a good salad bar, and an exercise room! Ya Right! LOL!

I didn't make the cut when I applied at Roehl due to the fact my heart rate was too high. this was in 2009 before they started with the whole bmi thing. They had you run through a series of exercises, and checked your heart rate after each one. Needless to say I've put in the work by hitting the weights/treadmill/bike for a couple hours a day, I watch what I eat/drink and have saved money so I can giver er another college try. I'm a female 5'7" and am now down to 160 lbs. I've been visiting my doctor on a regular basis to make sure I am indeed ready.
It all boils down to how badly you really want this. If you do, you'll do as I did, and put it the work.
Good luck on your future endeavors. -
I don't think that BMI/Sleep Apnea is ever going to make it into the regs because the diagnosis is not a simple one like high BP or blood sugar. The minute that it makes it into the regs, the company will have to pay for the sleep study and, they don't want to do that.
As it is they have to pay for your physical or at least your renewal (for liability reasons and it's in most state labor codes). How do you think that they are going to feel about paying for a sleep study for every potential new hire that is over the BMI threshold?
The only way that they are able to use BMI as a potential disqualifier is the current link to Sleep Apnea. Use BMI by and of itself and then there is potential discrimination.
So IMO it's going to remain up to the individual companies and the dictates of their respective insurance providers. At least until the "next big thing" comes along.
