Body fat content would be a more accurate standard to go by. It's almost as easy to calculate as BMI and only takes a measuring tape, a chart and about 5 minutes. I was constantly fighting the same battle in the Navy. Every PRT test and weigh-in, I had to be taped. My BFC always came in between 18% and 22%. Women are placed on weight control at 35%, just to give you an idea.
Body Fat Content would be a less arbitrary method of deciding who needs a sleep study than BMI.

I'll be honest.
I got targeted to take the sleep test. I took it and tested negative. No real loss and I was curious about getting tested before this career choice.
But if you hit the BMI limit. You're fat. Sorry, but you are. I hit it and guess what? I'm fat.
The money for the machine isn't the worst of all deals when you look at all that comes into it.
If you test positive, you pay $1970 over 32 weeks, at $55 a week.
This money includes:
The Test
The Machine (A DOT approved machine)
Extra Hoses/Masks
Check Ups
The software to transfer the information
And a couple other things
In General, it's not the worst deal out there. Not to mention the sleep test itself is VERY cheap by todays standards (test is $130). Doing a quick google, I found most tests were between $1,000-$1,500
As far as BMI. You DON'T get picked by BMI. The doctor examines you and if your weight is 'overweight' and you have stretch marks and the deal. They send you to a nurse to get your neck sized. The neck size is what determines whether you get sent, along with tongue length.
This way some guy who is 300lbs. of muscle won't be forced to take the test.
Look at this way. Sleep Apnea ain't the best thing out there. All of the people I've talked too said it has improved there sleep immensely thus improving there job performance.
Do you want a driver next to you who is yawning constantly or one who is freshly awake?
If it really bothers you. Lose some #### weight and keep it off. Cause even if you pass the first time, when you take the DOT physical later on, if you're over. You take the test.
I will give my official guarantee (that's pretty #### official) that within the next 5 years or so, every company will do what Prime is doing. -
I have friends full of muscle that have no necks. Wonder how long their tongues are?
Glad they aren't truckers. They would go into roid rage if they had to take a sleep test due to missing neck!!! -
They look at the throat opening, too. Muscular people will not have fat buildup along the inside of the throat. Whether the neck muscles are overdeveloped or not.
Stick your tongue out. It you can touch your nose with it,
give me your phone number. -
Injun Thanks this.

I would like some feedback concerning your fitness on the road. I have a concept I would like to implement at truck stops in the USA to help keep our truckers in shape. Is there a demand, would you use a fitness facility on the grounds of a truck stop, would you change your diet, if available, at truck stops?
-
I sure would. I can also get exercise running from the lot lizards.
