Usually it will show up on the display as a def quality problem.
No real need to do anything. Next time you get fuel, put in some fresh DEF. It should clear the problem.Last edited: Oct 26, 2025
tscottme, Concorde, Oxbow and 1 other person Thank this. -
You sho
You can drain the def and refill, it’s a 17mm bolt on a Volvo I believe. I would also replace the def filter. Another issue could be def quality sensor which is part of the def level sensor (rare but happens). get yourself OTR scan tool. They come in handy on occasions like these.Nahbrown Thanks this. -
I had the def tested before Loves closed and the def is fine. The sensor is bad. Heres the problem, the truck thinks the def is bad and will ratio me after 190 mins.
so we sit here until monday when a new sensor can be had and installed.
This truck has cost me 2 Loads in the last 10 days. We are staying up late truck shopping online … -
Or simply don't put water in the DEF tank, or pee in it.
rollin coal, 201 and Nahbrown Thank this. -
So let me get this straight, you are sitting somewhere because some stupid sensor, with possibly time sensitive cargo, like this poor person stuck in Dallas with a similar situation. As an old timer at my kitchen table, I can turn the power off, but really, how, and most importantly WHY, do you people put up with this nonsense? No wonder there's no coffee creamer on our shelves. I was green, but my mentors were a rough bunch, and didn't take this baloney. They found a way to make it work, like a 5 pound sledge hammer to the DEF unit and deliver the load, and make money. It wasn't rocket science. I sit back and think of the "hardships" we went through years ago, and know what? They pale in comparison to what you folks have to put up with, just to drive a danged truck, for heavens sake. I couldn't possibly have an answer, nobody does, we're in too deep, a spiral we can't possibly skate out of, and you are "looking" for another? Don't you see, it will be the same crap, different shovel? I tell you what, if I was looking for a career today, like I was in 1978 , you can bet it sure wouldn't be trucking.

Look into the OTR reset tool. Definitely worth the money IMO. You would atleast be able to clear the codes and keep rolling.Nahbrown and North Pole Nightmare Thank this.

With that tool you can run a forced regen, might clear it.You can also set the tool to live when its running and see everything that's going on.
Gives you the def quality number and ash load, and all the various Temps and other things.
Then you can check the item,it will tell you the range of the item it should be, and what to do if it's out of range.
I think good def reads 32%.
My truck likes a forced regen about once a month,no idle time,I have an APU. -
Devil's advocate viewpoint: You put in an AWFUL LOT of very cool work -- remodeling the interior of your current tractor.

With that in mind -- why don't you simply "embrace the suck"....fix the glitch with the DEF -- & keep the machine you have?
If you trade tractors -- how do you really know if/whether the next one won't give you even WORSE problems?
