Suggestion: if Walmart is currently your ultimate goal after 3 years of driving experience -- then I would offer this.....
Before you sign up with Walmart -- spend some good time driving in the intermodal world -- either with Swift, Schneider....or even J B Hunt.
Intermodal -- "where the rubber meets the rail"![]()
Why intermodal.....you may ask?
Having done both, I can tell you that with intermodal -- you will spend FAR MORE time backing up -- as opposed to your colleagues over in the OTR world.
All that extra practice perfecting your backing techniques will come in REAL HANDY later....at Wally World.
When I left Schneider -- the intermodal fleet was where it was really at (within Schneider, that is) -- they treated the intermodal drivers better, because that's where Schneider was making the most money.
It may very well still be that way.

I actually have a ton of intermodal experience. E everything I did in the army, whether I was operating the kalmar to load/unload a trailer or move the trailers with the 915 tractor, was 20 and 40ft containers. 99% of the time we were either uploading to a container ship, or downloading the ship and transferring to either civilian transport tractors or loading them onto railcars.
So I have that as well as moving the vacuum locked trailers that go back and forth to/from Puerto Rico currently at Walmart. Let me say...those trailers are pos's. I'm a big guy at 6'1 ~230 pounds. Sometimes I struggle to get those rust covered doors open! I always make sure I have a hammer or at least a crowbar on the yard truck whenever I'm out in the yard lolNightWind Thanks this. -
Just wondering why you are paying for school when you are a vet?

When you get on your trainer's truck, this is what you do-
Eat two cans of Stagg Dynamite Hot Chili every day.
Straight from the can.
The rest will take care of itself.Sons Hero, hope not dumb twucker and Zoltan1a Thank this. -
If you're going to drive for a mega, if I were you, I would have a much bigger fear of getting a crap truck than a crap trainer.

These days they hand out pretty new trucks even to brand new drivers

Never knew that such videos existed.
There's too much content out there on the interweb. -
I strongly recommend the best way to start trucking is to find the trucking company/driving job situations BEFORE starting CDL school. That means taking however long it takes to thoroughly researchbeach company and once you decide that decide if/when/how you get the license. Most newbies start CDL school and devote the few unoccupied minutes between start & finish of school to research employers.NightWind Thanks this.
