Yes.......if you don't plan it carefully....you could indeed get laid off.
Proof?
Don't just take my word for it....

Even though some don't want to admit that it exists.....the recession out there is REAL.
General freight volumes are down, and will likely go down....further.
Freight rates are significantly down.....and may stay down for a while.
Diesel prices are ridiculously high--and may stay that way....for some time.
Thus--plan your trucking entry carefully.

I work at a 7-Eleven right now. After taxes I make a little over $3000 a month. A big chunk of it goes towards my rent. Saving some money and getting out to breathe are the two reasons I want to drive a truck. I have met many truck drivers. They come to my store. They seem pretty happy. They are also very encouraging.
Another Canadian driver Thanks this. -

The truck drivers who deliver to your store are usually in the following freight sectors:
- food service/beverage delivery, or.....
- fuel delivery.
BEWARE: Food service and/or beverage delivery can definitely be EXTREMELY HARD work.
Also--fuel hauling is NOOOOOT a good place for CDL beginners--or those with limited experience.

But....they do indeed earn it.

Driving the truck itself is what is making me nervous. I am not a great driver. I don't have any tickets or accidents but I am not a great driver. Also I have been driving a little 2 door Jeep last few years. It is a manual, I hope that experience helps.

I’d not get to concerned with telling or asking your landlord if you can use the mailbox just yet
You are a ways away from that
As mentioned the economy is slow but not for everyone and the companies that are staying busy have probably already gotten rid of the dead weight and keeping those who get the job done busy and probably not looking to add anyone else much less a new driver who may be afraid to driveAnother Canadian driver and Awara Thank this. -
I also think if you’re living on $3000 now and eliminate that rent for something cheaper that even in a slow economy you should be fine but I’m not a company driver and I assume that depends a lot on who you go with
I’d start with getting in a truck and see if it’s something you can do without holding your breath
This is not a job to do if your in constant fear
There’s a lot of unknowns and problem solving situations you will be inLast edited: Nov 16, 2022
