For those considering both private truck driving schools and company paid/owned training, there is a Federal Grant you can get if you want to go the private route: It's called the WIA Grant.........This grant covers 100% of the cost of the school.......It applies to all schools that are state approved........However, your income can't be above $6,845 in the past 6 months..........There's only one way around that, and that's if you had a permanent job (temporary job doesn't qualify) and got laid off; income would not be considered in that situation; you would be automatically eligible........To find out if a certain school is state approved, or other details about this grant, contact the WIA representitive at you local state employment office.Hope this helps someone who may be eligible for this grant.

I know that if you go through Driver Solutions' company-paid training programs, they will work with all types of Federal grants at all their campuses. The only grant they won't work with is the GI Bill.

So you don't have to go to a private school with those, if you want company-sponsored training with a job after school, you can use your grants for those instead!

Also when choosing a school money is not always the first thing you should look into... But the quality of training being provided.... Trust me this is definitely not a game when it comes to trucking and getting the best training possible is the most important thing you could choose.....
I have seen some really scary stuff as of late....

Ask many many many questions here and ask the potential school...
Many schools out there just pushing people there and it is about the $$$$$
Putting many many many unsafe drivers on the road that are a threat to themselves and to the public....
Just cause they are state approved does not mean they are a good school.....

    Your Absolutely Right TruckerJO

I applied for a WIA grant here in Missouri and I was thrilled. However, the government program supports some of the worst truck driving schools in the country. Unfortunately, I went to one of them. The school was so unbelievably bad I just quit. The government didnt even care. The employees just want to distribute the money and thats all. No quality control whatsoever. If U get a wia loan be grateful. Even if you have to drive 300 miles to a good school do it!! I was lazy. The school was only 15 minutes from home. I would never have attended that school if i had to pay for it myself!!!

The best CDL schools are located at the community colleges around the country. Avoid these FOR PROFIT schools at all cost!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I do not qualify for the WIA Grant myself, but I was looking into it because I'm planning to go to the truck driving school at our local junior college.........It's a good school with a good reputation.........My wife's son-in-law went there a couple years ago and thinks very highly of it, and is now doing well as car hauler.........When I mentioned private schools, I had community colleges in mind as well, as many of them are private schools that have partnered up with the college.......And I was just basically making a distinction between trucking companies that have their own schools, and all others.......Mainly I just wanted to inform those who may qualify for this grant who wasn't aware of it......It may meet a real need for many.

    Kinghunter,
My application for WIA grant is going through the county I live in. Here it is overseen by a group called the Workforce Investment Board. I sent you a link to a state site in Florida that might help you get started.
