We have "kinda" mentioned the Fed Ex speeds on I-5, as for the bus...I can almost guarantee you he was doing "his limit", which would be 70(+/-) which is typical for that type of bus, charter/casino bus group. Myself, I look at buses to be the same as the trucks, or worse, on a safety basis. They are top heavy, excess weight unevenly distributed, and their brake to weight ratio is worse than a big rig...IMHO!
It is a fine day...brisk here in Fife, WA, but clear skies and about to be loaded and back to Sacramento! Nice to hear/read from you!

I watched the media's interview with CHP Lt. Commander Carpenter. From what he said, the car and bus were going northbound. When the Fed Ex truck crossed the median, it first clipped the car, then collided head-on with the bus. He mentioned nothing about the Fed Ex driver trying avoid a car on his side of the road.
joseph1135, otherhalftw, blairandgretchen and 2 others Thank this. -
Everyone is so quick to jump on Fed EX. I pray for those who lost their lices, their families and friends. I wasn't there, don't knoe what happend but it is horrible. You people should have to pull the bodies out of an accident like this, then you would remain silent. Several years ago a car went between the truck and trailer he was pulling, a load of fuel S bound on 5 around 319mm. The truck exploded under a bridge, killed 6 people in the car and I will never forget the odor from the bodies.

Point blank...governing trucks doesn't stop an unfit unqualified driver from doing something dumb.. We see it everyday out here
gpsman Thanks this. -
Blairandretchen--too much to quote--why cant you find safety ratings for fed ex? All their companies are listed on safer web.....
ground=265752
freight=239039
express=86876
critical=164025
Its all public record--they are a publically traded corp.... -
This is a horrible occurrence all the way around, and my heart goes out to these people and there families.
I don't know what happened or why this happened, however the local Good Day Sacramento (CBS) doesn't even mention the car in their live broadcast. -
Terrible tragedy. Sounds like maybe it wasn't the driver's fault if the car hit or he had to swerve to avoid it. No proof of tailgating or anything yet. In my experience, the fedex drivers I've had the most trouble with have had some green striping on the trailers, usually doubles and looks like O/O's hauling it. Especially across I80 in the winter. Usually the company red and blue drivers in day cabs have been fairly safe in my opinion.
Regardless though, sad day for all. -
1. He crossed the median and struck the other vehicle.
2. If there was a vehicle he was avoiding (in his same travel direction), the safest course would have been the opposite direction into the field adjacent to the highway, not across the median into opposing direction travel, or to get on the brakes and take the single vehicle in front in a braking aspect reducing the initial impact.
3. If the above (second item) is the issue, then his proximity to the vehicle (his direction) was compromised and his reaction space allowance was not enough to safely avoid an issue.
4. If he was tired...he should have taken an exit and gotten some rest.
Too many "IF's" to make clear decision...except...FED EX was at fault!
