I just applied for the FedEx apprenticeship program. Have Class A CDL but have not drove a trucks since 1996. Have an office job now that most would consider great. I hate it, hate the thought of it and is tends to suck every bit of life out of me.
Anyways I am looking for a way to get back into the transportation industry without resorting to the bottom feeders.

Well good luck with getting on with FedEx, I know they require Hazmat and doubles triples from what I've read.
However not every starter company is a bottom feeder (Though alot of them area), you just have to take the time and research what best fits you. Also, being home everynight is a bonus of working a office job so keep that in consideration. -
Its busy freight season coming up so just check the fedex website. I remember seeing a few apprentice spots on there.

Yes I know that being home every night is great. But with FedEx line haul, LTL and city I believe I would be home most of the time.
When did insurance start playing such a huge role in how much experience a driver needs.
When I drove 1993-1996 I worked for a moving company. I took and passed the test after practicing for a week. Boss handed me the keys and I drove all over the place without ever having an issue, ticket, DOT problem. -
Insurance became a issue the second they realized they had the company by the balls.

What is the trick to getting an interview? I want to be persistent without being pushy.

Being low on the "totem pole", you'd probably do lots of fill in and swing shift work. Many LTL's put "newbies" on a call list and you don't find out if you're working that day until they call you a few hours beforehand. Also, many LTL's have their drivers work the dock long before and long after they drive. Some terminals refuse to operate like this... and for others it's SOP.
Who knows... you may luck into a stable position with reasonable hours from the start.
No doubt you've got to do work that you enjoy in this world because life is too short, but working office hours that allow you to be in your own bed at a reasonable time every night and enjoy weekends off is many a drivers' dream here.

Ok, had my first phone interview after being persistent and calling a couple of times. Was told that the job is a dock job with very rare driving they will put me thru driving training. There are 70 people on the list and only 24 full time driving jobs. They said the list is probably 3-5 years long. What exactly does this mean? I would just fill in and work the dock full time. Does the job pay differently then driving? Going to do an in person interview next week sometime. I am still excited.

So yes, you'll be a dock monkey and depending on what kind of terminal you are out of, you might never see a truck but rarely. -

I friend is new to trucking industy and is getting broken in real good with a bottom feeder company you know them, "covenent" hummmmm
and he needs a break!
can anyone help him with Fedex apprenticship program with some info as to who to contact and call for information and application !!!!
I understand it is for the month of march only that thay do this!!!
