Been a rather quiet last couple of weeks. Been on the night shift that has turned out to be rather pleasant. Start at 9:30 pm on the dot and finish exactly 6am. Volunteered to work on my day off the last 2 weeks. With the night differential pay and the extra days pay, the money is off the charts. Will be headed home Saturday for a week off.
On the personal front, the wife and I are putting our plan in motion for retirement. The home we had built 19 years ago will be put on the market by the end of the year, and we are planning on having a house built up in Daphne Alabama to retire in. We will be going up when I get home to look at new construction. I’m quite sure by the end of this year, the end of trucking will be here.
Though this job is one for the books, and I wish I had found it earlier, it’s time. We’ve worked very hard the 25 years we’ve been married for this opportunity. Mrs JohnBoy keeps asking me if I’ll miss it. I keep telling her I already do, and have been the last 15 years. It’s not the same anymore. Those good days ended a while ago.Sirscrapntruckalot, surf_avenue, wulfman75 and 15 others Thank this. -
Congratulations on the future home plans and the decision to hang the keys. Even with the great job and boss you now have when it's time to retire only you can tell.
I grew up the son of a truck driver and had no desire to do anything else as a job. After high school, a stint in the USNavy, pulled wrenches until I turned 21 and could legally cross state lines I began my 44 years and 3 million mile career.
A few companies, a couple of recessions and oil embargo and marriages later I knew that it was time too. My bride of 45 years now and I decided to become full time RV people and it has been a really good choice for us.
Do I miss being a truck driver? Yes, most of the time. But being on the road I still have the opportunity to stop at truck stops and be near drivers and trucks and have an occasional conversation. I do not miss the ignorant 4 wheelers, the increased traffic and food warehouses. I was fortunate to use paper logs, manual transmissions and good common sense not computers, auto transmissions and micro managing.
I again congratulate you on your decision. You are a real inspiration and professional and I always look forward to your posts on TT. I wish you the best.surf_avenue, 4mer trucker, dwells40 and 5 others Thank this. -

@JohnBoy treat yourself to a dinner at Felix’s Fish Camp when you’re in AL, just across the bay by the USS Alabama, heck I’d move there just for that restaurant

Last Linehaul run for the week. Will be home tomorrow afternoon. I’m really comfortable doing this Memphis turn. No issues whatsoever, trailers are ready on both ends, no sets to hook. I’m running 6 nights and average 404 miles per night. The best part? $1.00 per mile for my pocketbook. And only in my little world can I hit a deer, do $20K in damage, then get assigned a ‘24 Volvo that is now my regular truck. Be safe everyone, will be home tomorrow for 9 days.
