Well he was very lucky, the van missed the tree and the house by a small margin, it doesn't look like it was damaged very bad.
From the looks of it the driver door got damaged the most and maybe the back a little bit. Hopefully he still has a job.

Reminds me of when i was a kid at 19 driving for a local lumber supplier in my town in Michigan.

The delivery trucks were 2 gas Chevrolet 2 ton straight trucks with dump flatbeds.

ist day on the job the Foreman who was like 30 and a complete know it all dik drives me out to a house out of town to show me how to dump a load of lumber .We arrive at the house and i get out of the truck and notice that the dozer had just back filled around the garage and it was not compacted at all. i had grown up building houses so was very familiar with the conditions.

So I warned Hotshot that getting in that soft sand may not be a good idea but he didn't listen and backed right into anyways than proceeded to raise the bed and dump the lumber while trying to pull out.Now he is stuck and instead of waiting for me to dig him out he starts popping the clutch , well that lasted about 5 times and than the drive shaft went its separate way and we rode home in a towtruck.

So this story is only the precursor to the one I mean to tell you.

3 months later a new older guy of about 50 starts there and a super nice guy but he is a little slow up top.

So 1st thing that morning we have 2 trucks loaded to go and one of them is going to this same house from the previous incident and the other to another site 5 miles from the other.

The super dik manager gives the new guy the load gong to the house were he buried the truck and I had been out there a week previous and the sand was still like quicksand. , so i suggested i take that load and give the new guy the other load going to a site that was paved.

nope he says I am the manager listen to me.

So we leave and I arrive at my paved job site and dump my lumber and than start heading back.At the last minute i decided to take a little detour and check on the new guy .

Now this site is on a long winding dirt road built on a berm about 10 feet tall and goes for a 1,4 mile off the main raod.

So I drive up the winding road and past the pond and pull up and there is the new guys truck buried in the same spot as the previous incident. So I have to park my truck on the slight incline leading to the area and I set the emergency brake and put the truck in 1st and get out to find the driver who is no where to be seen.

So I wander out back and run into him digging for old plywood for the tires.

Suddenly I hear what sounds like another truck pulling up and just as I and the other driver come around the corner we see my truck rolling backwards in gear down the driveway. Now it is rolling at a pretty good clip. That old 454 had a lot of miles on it and wasn't the strongest and obviously the rear brakes hadn't been adjusted in a while.

So we witness it continue down the drive way for 200 feet until it decided to turn and go backwards 1st down the berm and across a small flat area so it could continue to roll until it was sitting in the middle of the pond in about 3 feet of water.

The LOOK on my face was Priceless.kinda like that kid in Home Alone.

I could have freaked ,I could have been pissed, but nope . I had one thing in mind, SURVIVAL.

If I didn't get that truck out of there the yard Dik would chastise and Ridicule me for Eternity.

So I turn to the new guy and say where is your shovel and start throwing sand like a China man digging the Panama Canal.

In short order I have his truck dugout.

Than he is like jump in I will give you a ride back to the yard .

I am nope. I hereby Camedire this truck. and while he cried I proceeded down over the berm and lined up with my truck that is 150 feet into the pond. Now i have his truck 50 feet into the pond in a foot of water and mine in 3 feet with the starter underwater and a strap between them

Luckily the bottom was firm and we had me out in a jiffy and with a little dry area on the edge we pop start my truck and hit the berm at an angle and pull the berm and head down the road.

We both pulled up to the yard with not a soul knowing any better.Truck starter was dry and cranking like a Champ.

We both had a laugh for months and the yard Dik a always thought it was about him.

The truck is still mid-flight and he was more worried about his hand-held scanner, lol.:biggrin_25523: Seriously though...he lucked out. He could have taken out that house or REALLY creamed the van with that tree (it looks like he just ruined the door).

This has been around for a while. I don't think it's funny at all. These drivers have like over 100 pickups and deliveries A DAY, and it's a very demanding job. You won't see any overweight old men doing this job. Just shows, camera's are everywhere.

That's just it...I don't think what happened to him is funny...as in funny "haha." What's funny to me about the video was his reaction to the incident as it was unfolding. By that...I mean that under stressful conditions, people will fall back on their training and perform according to how they were...well...programmed.

In this case, I have to assume that his terminal manager and/or company so severely conditioned/beat care of his hand-held computer into his head that he actually doubled back to retrieve it while his vehicle was rolling out of control down a hill. Or maybe his brain just clicked into survival/deal with what you can mode and said "dude...the truck is gone...may as well pick up that scanner so you don't get #####ed at about that too."
