As some have posted that they are basically using the RF gain as the squelch. By doing this they are defeating the purpose of the squelch. As an example with my RF gain clear up and the skip starts rolling with an s-9 or higher signal, I just turn my squelch up high enough not to hear the noise and skip. But I can still talk to someone close by. Now as the day goes on and the skip dies down, and I see the noise level is an s-3, I know the skip is gone so I just turn my squelch down till I hear the threshold (noise) and then turn the squelch up till it quits. This is the optimum performance for the radio to hear weak signals. So if you turn your RF gain down you can't tell by the S/RF meter that the skip is gone, because the RF gain affects the true readings of the S/RF meter.

Thats right. I ran mine so I didn’t hear anyone more than 1/2 mile away. Too often squelch would block out weak signals that were close by. I don’t know much about CB radios. Just how I ran mine. If someone wasn’t within eyesight, I didn’t want to hear them.

Tune the antenna by switching to cal, go to channel 1, or 40, key up on the Mike, get the needle up to the red. Alternating between both channels, try to match both readings. I think that’s correct. If not hopefully someone else will chime in.

Doin so does not tune the ant,all that does is set up tje radio to read what ant is doin..Doing so will tell you to shorten or lengthen ant to meet required swr which is 1.5 or lower..
Usually 1 and 40 will be slightly higher than 19 which is what you want.......If you run local and have a different channel you like to run then same process but use fav ch as your middle ch and go from there..

That is the way I've always done it. It's worked well for me now for about 50 years!
