Only if there is some other valid reason to refuse entry that was not disclosed on the rehabilitation application. If the application is accepted that means the person is admissible. If the applicant lied or made an incomplete application or committed some other act then those are valid grounds for refusal.

Uh... no. They turn you around and send you back to the U.S.

    Dan.S and upnorthwpg Thank this.

Then they have changed the rules in the last ten years since I looked at paying the “rehabilitation” fee for an 8 year old DUI. I was all set to pay the $1000 until I read the fine print.

And yes, I do believe the “nice lady” at the Sarnia crossing would have thrown me in jail like she offered if I showed up at the border again... pardon or not.

I was living in Sarnia—crossed every day, twice a day, for almost a year. I was working in Michigan but living across the border while my wife waited on immigration to the US. I admitted the DUI any time they asked.

Everything was good until I got one guard that obviously had personal reasons to hate anyone who ever got a dui. After threatening me with jail and interrogating me for over an hour, she finally let me go back to Michigan. My mom and dad had to go over and get my stuff.

Meanwhile, my wife and kids were stuck over there and I was stuck in Michigan.

So you weren't actually legally living in Canada; you hadn't been granted resident status (visa)?

Not all are bad though. There was a young gal at the border in Emerson, MB that questioned me right before Christmas.

She said, “are you bringing across any Christmas gifts?”

“Uh... no... going shopping in Canada.”

Meanwhile, my back seat was completely taken up by a humongous stuffed whale and other stuff for my kids. Lol.

She smiled and said, “Ok then, enjoy your visit!”

No, because I wasn’t planning on immigrating to Canada. I was also forthright to Canadian Immigration about that as well. My wife was just waiting on her green card.
