Not only is spywear/adware/malware inconvenient, I have seen it completely screw the windows installation. And it can slow your computer to a crawl.

As far as popups, they absolutely can cause that problem. My wife freaked out when it started showing up on her laptop a couple of months back. She thought I had done something.

Search and Destroy and Adaware. I use both, and scan once a week. They always catch something.

 

Try a FREE Program called HOSTSMAN (short for Hosts manager) from Abelhadigital.
It blocks access to MANY sites (spam/adware/virus/malicious content etc)
either INTENTIONAL or UNINTENTIONAL. In other words, chances if you DO get adware or even a trojan D/L, this program will prevent that program from accessing the new sites. AND it will block YOUR access to those sites. It will ALSO block most of those annoying adverts (like doubleclick) on websites and prevents them from placing a "tracking cookie" on your system. I update mine regularly.

 

Since switching to Firefox, I breathe a lot easier as well. IE is just like leaving your front door unlocked. I like to have control, and a good firewall is an absolute must.
