This is a bit long but I hope it might help you backing. One quick questions, you say you don't need job placement. What are your plansfor your CDL? Might help us give you suggestions if we know what your goalsare.

Backing was a nightmare for me too. Everyone has a different way of looking at it. One of my instructors told me when I was struggling with backing to try this. Does "rightsy tightsy lefty loosy" mean anything to you? On the driver side of the truck, if you need the back of the trailer to go left you make the angle between the truck and trailer tighter (turn wheel to the right). If you want the back of the trailer to go right you want to loosen up the angle between tractor and trailer (turn wheel to the left). Keep an eye on where the trailer wheels are going while watching the trailer rear. See if you can see any tracks of dirt left from other trailers. Also look in your opposite mirror a couple of times keeping any eye on the front corner that can hit objects sitting next to you. Don't be afraid to pull forward some as many times needed to straighten out a bit and reposition the trailer as needed to get it in the spot.

In a loading dock situation where there are no lines painted on the pavement, take a red rag or some object (that you can drive over) to put on the ground to give your eye a point to work with. Stand in front of the dock and envision aline on what will be your driver side out from the bumpers on the dock. Drop the rag out even with the front of other trailers. Pivot the trailer around this point.

Last thing is GOAL. Get Out And Look. Put truck in neutral, set the brakes and get out and look at the situation when you get confused and loose the big picture.

Go buy a toy tractor trailer and get down on the floor and play with it. Try different situations and get idea of what the trailer does in relationship to where the truck is.

Thanks for all the tips on backing a really appreciate it! I do not need job placement because I am a Teamster and I work on movie production sets and anything with the rubber tires and a gas or diesel engine has to be driven by us! :)

Hey, I hate to say it but it sounds like you should have made it infinitely clear to the instructors, staff and told them how important it is to you to get your drive time in. You should have been the first one at every possible moment to jump in the drivers seat. No one is going to do it for you. I learned that the hard way. If you aren't aggressive enough they wont "here" anything you have to say. You have a whole new skill set to employ now. This is not the military, you cannot sit back and wait your turn, you have to be able to take the reigns and be a go-getter.

I have several yrs. experience OTR and have been a trainer myself, I never take no for an answer and I do what it takes to accomplish my mission regardless of the circumstance given. Put the school behind you and press on...

I have been meaning to stop back in and update. First I would like to say thank you to everyone that helped with backing suggestions. My last post was week three at the school. They put me and three other students together that were all having problems with backing to get us ready for our final test. Test time came and it was going to be my 3rd and final time taking it. The school has a *rule* that you can only take it three times then they make you go to DMV with a truck and instructor. The DMV is an hour away. Come to find out two of the other students had already taken the test 4-5 times at the school. They only enforce the 3rd time rule when they feel like it. So you can really take it a million times, they just want to get rid of you as fast as possible. I failed miserably at my third time testing. I was called in by the horrible director of training and told with the other *failures* we would not be able to come back to school and they would have us come back ONE day before the DMV to practice. I was told it could be up to four weeks before this would happen. I knew right then I was going to be in trouble because I really need more then one day to practice backing. After our meeting the three of us walked outside.. just then the director from Corporate office in Florida walked outside. She came over and said she heard her *girls* had failed. She had a nice long talk with us and told us we could come back on the weekends and do whatever it took to pass. I knew it would be hard going from full time school to only coming sat and sun, but I would do whatever needed to be done to get out of there. So for the entire month of March I drove up and spent sat and sun practicing. I was fortunate enough to have the best instructor at the school *assigned* to help us. If it were not for him I would still be at the school. They still had not given us a date when we would be going to DMV..I was still struggling with doing the offset and 90 degree ally dock..I finally figured out how to do straight line backing. Once I got a dmv date I asked the temporary school director if I could come back a few days just to be on point for the test...he said I could come all week if I wanted to do it. Our wonderful instructor took us under his wing and poured everything he had in to me and the others. A few days before the DMV we were told that they were going to go ahead and test us one more time at the school. I had passed my Pre Trip test with a 96% and if we would of had to go back to the DMV we would have to take that test again...something I did not want to do as the NC test is crazy long.

The schools director of training, Mr. Friendly had stepped down from his job...I wish he would of stepped down before I got to the school but I found out he had ONLY been in that position one week before I arrived. The new director is AWESOME! The day of the test it was pouring down rain...just like it had been on all three other attempts....this time I had a different outlook on things.....I had my instructor in my head the entire time telling me to RELAX and DONT OVER THINK THIS!.....I stopped worrying and stopped thinking about the test...I ended up only picking up two points in the 90...otherwise almost a perfect score. Road test was scheduled for the following week. Once again my favorite instructor worked with us and made sure we were prepared.....I passed it the first time and now have my CDL. If I had never had the one Instructor I believe I would still be there. He really went out of his way to help me when everyone else could care less.
I am glad I was persistent about getting that last full week of practice, it made all the difference in the world. This was a very trying experience for me and I am glad it is over and done with! Thanks to all for the encouragement and tips!

Sometimes it just takes that one guy who is willing to go beyond what is expected to give us gals the extra time needed. Glad it has worked out.
