OK, in my rookie year they shut 80 down in Wyoming. Something about icy roads & high winds over elk mountain. From what I hear, they do that often!
Anyhow, I got to talking to this Swift driver! We both were in our rookie year & we both only had about 6 months under our belt. When they opened 80 back up, we heard that "light" loads were still not promitted. He was empty & I had a whopping 6000 pounds of stryofoam on my flatbed. Both combinations are not good in the wind, expecially when your playing ice road truckers!
Well we heard other drivers talking about US-30... We we rookies & didn't know what US-30 was like or even if we were allowed, but we scrambled to our trucks anyhow to adventure out on this 2 lane road & get on our merry little way!
Mr. Swift & his empty trailer got the front door and away we went! We were cruising across 30 just jibber jabbing over the radio having a decent time & trying to be "SAFE" on these snow covered icy roads....
The all of a sudden the wind picked up & grabbed Swift's trailer! What a sight to see & I don't recommend anyone see it anytime soon! I was following too close. Anyhow, this wind tossed Mr. Swift into a full 90 degree jacknife. His trailer was in the ditch sideways, his tractor was still in the lane, and we we still moving down the highway! The only thing I remembered from "driving school" at that point was don't touch your brakes!!! I was screaming over the radio "Swift, don't touch your brakes! You can power out of that!" He was screaming back "I'm trying not too......." So I said it again! "Don't touch your ####### brakes! If you do, your a goner & I'll me smacking you pretty ####### hard cause I ain't gonna be able to stop!"
Well what seems like forever was actually only 10-15 seconds. Maybe more, but not more then a minute! He pulled out of the jacknife. I didn't hit him. We both learned a valuable lesson & we both had a whole conversation to talk about on our drive to Sinclair!
Haven't seen that driver since then. I wonder if he is still driving?simplyred1962, Ducks, tinytim and 3 others Thank this. -
My 2nd winter driving and my 1st time over Donner's pass, needless to say, I had heard all the horror stories so I was pretty anxious! If the signs said "30 mph",I did 25! EVERYONE was ######## at me on the radio, so I got on it and told everyone exactly why I was going so slow! That didnt seem to matter, they continued to pizz and moan. So I turned it off!
Here's the scary part!
I got the part where drivers are "suppossed" to check their brakes, well, me being a rookie and not waiting TO DIE, I pull over.
I set the tractor brakes ONLY, gonna check the trailer 1st (this was b4 automatic slack adjustors, ####, I' old!). I made it to the 2nd drive axle and the truck STARTS TO ROLL DOWN THE HILL WITHOUT ME IN IT!
You never saw a fat man move so fast! It only moved a few feet, but all I could picture was me at the top and the truck at the bottom of the hill, trying to explain to my boss where the load of frozen lasgna went! Obviously I had some adjusting to do b4 I could safely go down the hill.Ducks, JustSonny, LavenderTrucker and 1 other person Thank this. -

So there!!! -
Where would you like me to start?.....Ok we will just start with the last two months....
Last week I was going south on the Deagan (I-87 in the Bronx). A minivan in the right lane in front of me, I was in the middle lane. Blew a front tire, lost control swerved in front of me then rolled back across the interstate. Landing in the median. I never let off the gas. Just another day in NYC.
A week or so before that I was going north on the cross Bronx (I-95) in the middle lane. A car from the right lane and one from the left both decided the wanted to merge into the middle lane at the same time in front of me. They both came over and bounced off of each other and then went back into the outside lanes. I didn't hit my brakes that time either. I just let off the accelerator for a few seconds.LavenderTrucker, JustSonny and Ducks Thank this. -
Actually a news reporter once said, its not a near miss, it's a near hit....But, the one that I always remember is leaving the yard and running down a 2 lane in the rain in daylight and the inside of the windshield was fogging up and so I started to clean it with a paper towel while driving about 45 mph. While my eyes focused on the windshield, the car ahead of me started to make a left and had to wait for traffic to clear and I didn't see him slowing and when I focused back to the road, I was dang near up his arse and had to make a fancy manuever and had the you know what scared out of me.
Ducks, LavenderTrucker and JustSonny Thank this. -
Did you do a smelly in the truck? I did that once in a accident! The seat turned brown, the smell was unbearable!!! And the best part, it wasn't my truck! I was driving another guys trucks since he skipped work that day & my truck needed a new radiator.
JustSonny Thanks this.
