Regardless of engine, I have usually changed out the factory fill oil at around 10,000 miles. There is a lot of residue that is in any new build engine that I like getting out of there and getting fresh oil in. There is a lot more metal residue and stuff that gets loosened up in the first few thousand miles. After that, I just move on to OEM recommended intervals, or whatever regular oil sample testing shows me.
I won't be the most help to answer this but for me based on the computer running empty it looks like 7+. They have never been filled up after only running empty so I couldn't tell you a pump to pump number. My average MPG is around 5.3 which is running half the time empty half loaded to 140,000 lbs. I run a super B pneumatics so they are not the most aerodynamic which cuts into my economy. The empty train weight is around 44,500LBS for my sleeper (48inch), about half a tonne lighter for the day cabs. I have never weighed the tractor individually. As an aside, I know one guy who runs both KW and Mack and he has been getting better milage out of the Macks running the same routes.
That's the oil change cycle my boss uses for all our trucks, although I have noticed recently he seems to have changed it up, and is now going 10,000 to 15,000 miles and about 200 hrs, so about every 7 weeks or so.
Does anyone ever read the engine manuals? I always hear of "that is the way we do it" or "that is they way my pappy did it" kind of things, but I never hear someone state "that is what the manual says to do under XYZ conditions".
