Thinking of going Swift, but I have a few questions. Can Swift look into medical history? I was at prime and got kicked out because I have a patellar subluxation problem. I got all my paperwork signed and stuff but the Prime doctor still wouldn't take me without physical therapy and a follow up with my orthopedic doctor in 3 months... No health insurance soon and no income as I quit my previous job for prime soooooo. Looking at other companies. I just wanna make sure Swift can't look into my previous medical thing and see it and kick me out to. How does the training program work? I read that when you get off the bus, you gotta wait for the shuttle which runs every 3-5 hours. That sure does seem like a long time considering Prime was every 30 minutes... Also read that I have to room with 4 other people, seems a bit much. Shuttle picks up and goes to terminal at 5:15? Which means I gotta get up at 4 am for shower and all that? Little crazy there... Are meals comped? What are out of pocket expenses?

I really wanna drive a truck... I have no real family (other then my dad which I live with) and hardly any friends. All my friends are on the internet. All I wanna do is get a laptop, drive for 11 hours (legal limit I believe) then hunker down and play some games with my online friends and then go to bed. Would be nice to have a dog but I believe I would need to lease/owner operate for that. How hard is leasing with swift? Will I lose my ARSE like some seem to do?

What are the company trucks for swift like? With prime they were all newer trucks (none over 5 years old) and some had APU's. I'm sure I'll have more questions, just trying to get a feel for swift before I apply... I gotta do something fast, my money that I have saved up is slowly dwindling while I'm jobless...

When I went with swift, the medical eval was done with an outside doctor and was a breeze. Sorry about your bad luck. I think its worth a shot with swift. I wouldn't bother telling the recruiter this stuff, not there bussiness and they don't even know what to do with the knowlege. Just go threw the physical and let the doctor do his checks and leave.

I wish you well on your adventure. However I would slow down just a little bit. Best advice is if they dont ask then dont tell. Take it one day at a time. Sounds like you are getting ready to start Swifts school? I would worry about that before worrying about leasing or owning a truck. Once you get through school, and get out on the road on your own - refine your skills. Gather information on leasing over time. Give it time then when you feel confident that you are still wanting to drive a truck make other decisions based on whatever goals you have. Good luck to you. Im going to orientation Dec 6th in Edwardsville.

I would just honestly fill out the application and medical form. If the medical form ask for more information about your condition, then attach a copy of the forms from your doctor that say you are medically able to drive without problems. If they reject you they are violating the American Disability Act.

Which leg has the problem?Does that kneecap bother you , will you be able to drive for 10 hours per day? Don't say anything about it,if it doesn't bother you, just go with the flow.
Swift has a lot of different trucks;Volvo, kenworth,Peterbuilt;don't worry too much about your first truck as long as it's road worthy;it won't be your last truck.Swift takes the APUS out of the trucks and they want you to idle as little as possible.

why would swift remove the apu? And I wanted to lease a vehicle as soon as I can because I want a dog. My right knee gave me problems but it hasnt happened in a while and even when it did it wasnt that bad. All i want is to drive with a laptop, dog, and thats it. How does the swift school work? Length?

Prime has higher hiring standards than some other companies, and the FMCSA regs allow it, so they set the medical bar, so to speak. You will have to meet their requirements, no matter what any other company or public forum participant says. My guess is you might have better success with Swift--they are much larger and need many more applicants. Just keep this in mind: Getting medical advice from this or any forum is a really bad idea.

As for leasing, @kcmofire has it right. Slow down. WAY down. You have much to learn about the business before you even contemplate a lease. Driving a truck is not like any other job you've had and the number of people who fail at it is huge. Read all the posts you can, scoop up all the tidbits of information, good and bad, about Swift or any other company you are interested in, and pay particular attention to life on the road. Even the whiners will have something valuable to say. It is not a "drive 11 hours then sleep" kind of job, as you will see. And remember, you are just about to hit winter in most of the country; it has already arrived in some parts. That will change the picture.

    Good luck to you.

They have a legal right and regulatory responsibility to do so. A Swift physician can and will ask pertinent questions of another physician, if needed, and you will have to provide truthful information to the medical staff if asked. If you think you can hide a medical condition, you are already in the wrong business.

One thing is absolutely certain: Lie about anything on your application and you will be gone. The day the company learns about it.
