I've read on a few other company forums about anti-idling sensors and such. Does Swift have any temperature sensors that control idling or anti-idling policies?

I live in southeast Georgia and so the closest Swift terminal is Atlanta? Do orientations take place there? If so, anybody with any experiences with that terminal?

It's been a month and a half since I got my license after attending a cdl program at a community college. I've been having to deal with personal circumstances coming up and tying up loose ends before I go so that I can start trucking in good spirits and no worries about things happening at home. At what point is a recent graduate not recent enough? I've read that Swift offers a refresher course. . . . how much do they charge and how long is it?

Since you live in Southeast GA, take a look at Miller Transporters with a terminal in Garden City, GA.

or central reefer, they have a terminal there as well, but swifts treated me pretty good so far.

from my knowledge swift trucks use omni idle. so when it gets to a certain temp it goes on or off. ive also been in swifts that will continue to idle if u set the cruise.

    Anarcrothe,

Swift does keep track of idle time and will pester drivers who idle constantly, but I've never had a problem. I idle the truck when I have to and no more (extreme heat or cold and to charge the batteries). The only controls I know of on Swift trucks are the timed auto-shutdown, which is overridden by tapping the throttle or brake. I may be mistaken, but I don't think even new trucks are equipped with the temperature-sensitive anti-idle systems.

Atlanta does offer orientation, but some Georgia drivers are based out of Greer, SC. I haven't had bad experiences with either terminal.

I had a gap of about a month and a half between graduation from CDL school and the start of orientation with Swift, and I wouldn't expect that you'd need a refresher course (that doesn't mean it would be a bad idea). When I started, Rhoel was actually my first choice, but I waited too long (interviewing for local jobs that didn't work out), and fell outside of their required window, so I know your concerns.

    God bless.

They haven't used that in years.Unless they went back to them
They're programmed to shutoff but you can override and idle for as long as you like.
No Sensors yet that I know off. But who knows they might take a page out of the SNI book.

The Closest Swift Terminal is in Atlanta Area. It's in Decatur of I20 right outside the Loop.
    Unless Ocala Fl is closer.

also,if you're in 20 degrees or under you"ll have to idle all nite to keep fuel from gelling. my volvo is iquipped with a webasco heater and works good :)

I heard a rumor swift also has a sensor in cab that detects cigarette smoke and they are said to be fining drivers.

Yes, the idle shutdown can be shut off within a 1 minute window. It varies from truck to truck. My Volvo simply takes a press to the clutch pedal.
With a different truck it was setting the cruise control.

They always mention my idle time, and I've even gotten written up for it recently. But my other numbers (like fuel mileage, on-time, safety rating, etc) seems more important.

I idle as I need to - to keep warm enough or cool enough or to keep the batteries charged.
Or, if I am in very cold temps - like now.

Swift says to idle if you are below around 15 degrees to keep the fuel from gelling.
But if you do your idle time goes way up, and they only seem to look at the numbers - not why the numbers are where they are.
Catch-22. Idle and get yelled at for it, or don't and get yelled at for the cost of un-freezing.

Well, I have never actually been yelled at.
It's been... 'Your idle time is way too high, we need to get that down'.
So I explain what has happened in the past month to drive it that high, and it is always - OK, try to get it down.

But like I said, I did get a write up that went into my file.
    After 2 years.
I think they are trying to s.s.scare me, or something, into freezing or sweating the night through.

    Not gonna happen.

    Marky84 and scottied67 Thank this.

My new 2013 Volvo is the first truck I've had that had a real functioning heater.
But I still have to idle too much to keep the batteries up.

And idling below those temps will still raise your idle time - and the numbers are what they look at, not the reason why.
