Hi all. I'm new here, looking for information on getting a job.
I worked with an electrical contractor, Pike Electric, for 3 years, and drove buckets, flat beds, dump bed chip trucks, etc, and pulled trailers with backhoes, trackhoes, chippers, pole trailers, etc. Pretty much just your basic utility construction stuff.
Now since I have a Class A CDL I am looking for a company that won't make me go in debt by going to school, frankly since I have been laid off work, I've got really bad credit problems and can't or probably be refused any more debt.
I've lurked here for a while read some about companies, mostly bad, and was wondering if there is any good out there for training and that is hiring right now. I'm fairly confident that I don't need truck school as I am sure the driving of a tractor/trailer cannot me much different than the bucket trucks I have driven for 3 years now.
I found a trucking school on here a few weeks ago that I was interested in and was planning to call, but have since lost the name of the company and don't remember nor can find it. So I'm just looking for suggestions for other companies to look into.
Also, I am looking for info on how much different they could be as a call with Werner really pissed me off a while back. They tried telling me its a whole different world and I'd have to go to a school, and I told them I wasn't going into debt to go to a driving school that pretty much just helps me obtain a license that I already have.
Also I want to know about realistic home time and not what a company feeds you. I have a wife and 2 year old and would very much enjoy home time but I want to make as much as I can as well to support them.
Anyways thanks and your information will be much appreciated.

okay, found the company I was looking at a few weeks ago. Millis. Anyone know much about it? (sorry for adding to the questions above.)

I was gonna reply and tell you to apply at Millis lol.. I just got done with my 5 weeks out with my trainer. I too, have a wife and 2 kids, so hometime is important to me too. The thing with trucking that you have to realize is that in order to make money you can't be home all the time. With Millis, you can go home weekly if you want, but income may become a problem. I plan on staying out 2 weeks and coming home for 3 days. Depending where you live, you may get by the house for a couple hours while out on a load if it's not too far off your route. In my opinion, Millis is the best company out there for students (because i work there and haven't tried any of the others, but from what I've read, they are the best all around) and most of the veteran drivers here seem really happy. Their trucks are all late model (3-4 years old) The oldest truck in the fleet right now to my knowledge is an 06 and they just got rid of all the 08's and 09's due to the cat motors having problems and bought a bunch of 10's and 11's. As far as the school it's pretty reasonable, they will take it's either $20 or $25 a week out of your check for a year and as long as you stay the year, they waive the rest. Millis, like any other company is getting hundreds of apps a week, so it might be kinda hard to get in, but I've been VERY happy there so far. Everyone has been very helpful and friendly. I would highly recommend them. Any company you go to is either going to send you through the school or require that you have at least 6 months OTR experience in the past 6 months. I too had my CDL for 10 years when i started here, but no recent experience so I had to go back through the school. Good Luck, if you need anything else, there is a few of us drivers here on the site that I'm sure can help you.
