I got pulled in the scale house this morning. I was 1000 pounds over on the drives. 47.5" is the fifth wheel with trailer. The kingpin is in the middle of the tires. 1/2 tank of fuel 3/4 def. Company truck. He gave me a warning and level 2 inspection, which was clean. Fifth wheel to low?

Yup. Move 1000# up onto the steer and your problem is solved.

I was assuming the OP pulls a tanker, as a liquid product is the only thing that would be affected by 5th wheel height. Most tankers don't have sliding tandems. The solution here is simply to move the 5th wheel forward...has room for 1260# and only needs to lose 1040# from the drives.

IF the tandems can be slid, he could move them as well to balance the load that way...but that doesn't change the fact that the 5th wheel is too far back and he'll never get 80,000# legal where he's got it. If it is a liquid tank, he may look into a small riser or slightly taller 5th wheel plate in addition to moving it forward, so that the load is balanced better between the drives and trailer...needs about 1000# or so shifted backwards, too, to fully balance the load.

You know I feel dumb. I haven't played with sliding anything for about three years. Yes steers are light. Just move forward the king pin. I got fixated on fifth wheel height.
