All the paperwork is done and im getting orders and a plane ticket home from gtmo, cuba tomorrow and will most likely leave next Friday. I will still spend a few weeks in Norfolk for outprocessing but once i get my DD214 im making my final decision on who i want to go with be it Crete/Shaffer or Prime. Both are equally appeling to me and both have their own setbacks. Prime from what ive read is great to their company drivers and has their own school but i would be made to have a lightweight truck however i could deal with that. Crete/Shaffer has the Patriot fleet for vets and will pay studends drivers that are vets 43cpm after training but they dont have a school however the recruiter said that vets dont have to go to one of their approved schools. Still got about a month till im fully out of the Navy so ive got some time to make a final decision.

    tow614 Thanks this.

Since you still have a little while in VA... Might I suggest using your 9/11 and complete your CDL training with ATI. This way your not tied down to any one company, plus you don't have to worry about paying a company back if something goes wrong and you don't make it all the way through. It's what I did, and I'm glad I did.

Congrats BTW, and thanks for going on deployment as an Augmentee. :) I did mine in QATAR with SOCCENT.

yeah i was looking at that. either them or TCC. only thing is i dont want to have to wait two months if i finish with the navy after the class has already started.

I understand, but IMHO, you'll be much better off for doing it that way (I.E. some type of school, albeit ATI, TCC, etc..) than getting your CDL thru a company. And in worst case, do you have a friends you can stay with until you graduate? You'll get BAH, etc... Plus, to be honest... what's two month of prep time, getting ready for your next (possible) career/job.

my Fiencee and i will be staying in norfolk for at least a year... to my dismay lol. two months of being unemployed and not in school during that time is not exactly desireable. i have been studying for my cdl permit since i found out i was getting out two months ago and am going to the dmv to get my permit as soon as i get back.

If you enroll as soon as you get back, you will be that much closer to getting your CDL at an accredited school and helping to set yourself up for success in the near future. But whatever path you take, good luck to you and your (future) family. I'm retired Navy myself, (2013) so if you have questions, please feel free.

Sorry, But I have to disagree with you. most of the CDL schools are crap that only give you barely enough to pass the test, NO practical over the road training no experience in the mountains, inclement weather etc. etc. It makes for a weak and unsafe driver. nochin, I am an instructor at Prime and I am ALSO, retired Navy, BT1 (SW). I would recommend this company to anyone including my own sons, three of whom have also been navy. Read all the prime threads and go to the prime website, If you are a non smoker, I will take you as a student myself.

I started with a lightweight till I became a trainer then instructor, I am 6 ft 240 lbs. there is much more room than you think in them.
Nobody can touch prime for the quality of the equipment or the way the drivers are treated. they treat us like kings
