Well as all of u kno...well...the ones who have been reading my posts kno ive been on the hunt too find a company who will let me drive a tractor trailer....and has been a never ending battle untill today........Found a guy whos gonna give me a shot...Ill be driving by myself, Ill be drivin a 95 Freightshaker with a 435 3406E Cat and a 9 Speed, air ride. Hes gonna be havin me doo short runs from here too about 500-650 miles out soo he can stay kinda with me.....Soo in other words my prays been answered. But i got alot coming too me...I had too learn how too do a log book and that wasnt too bad but its the paper work which is gonna be intresting and everything else thats gonna come. I already went for a road test in a slightly different truck and it was loaded when i got in it and i couldnt believe how well it drove and how well i drove it...It was awsome soo he was happy with what he saw but i gotta learn on my backing tho he says and too use a bit more caution when drivin. I really cant wait too get on the road. Im gonna be getting too kno the truck tomorrow gotta clean it out and it up and get a few things underway. And im gettin paid 20% of the load soo sounds good with me. But i gotta borrow money from my folks cause all my bank accounts are try and have no cash. And im no gonna get paid tillthe following friday soo its gonna be ruff for a lil while. And if all goes well Hes got a awsome Peterbilt 379 hes gonna let me drive as long as i prove myself in this truck soo seem like things are finally gonna happen....Its just all up too me. I also am only gonna have a cooler too keep my food around soo i gotta figure all that out.
Anyways does anybody have any advice for me being its gonna be my first trip and being by myself?...Anything would be great... Thanks all.
Eric

really the most important thing be cautious be careful be considerate be patient and don't be up someone's ### backing will come with practice most important thing is to control your temper when you have to deal with these ignorant four wheelers good luck and Godspeed

Always use, and I mean always, use your spot mirror when changing lanes or making turns. There is always someone that will sneak in your blind spot when you think it's clear.
Be careful and you will be ok.pattyj Thanks this. -
good luck and congrats i am in the same boat as you still looking

Some will call me crazy for this but I'd stick with that FLD. I drive a 96 FLD and it's nothing to look at, but it has a good turning radius and for the most part is a comfortable truck. As far as being on your own, remember there's no stupid question, the only stupid question is the one you don't ask. Present yourself professionally to the customer and represent not only yourself, but your boss in a good way. Use discretion with weather, if YOU think it's too bad, don't drive, don't let others dictate your safety. I spent the last 2 years trucking in western PA and there was a time this past winter where my boss sent me out knowing dang well the roads were horrible, so just to make them happy I took the truck out, went down a few exits on 70 and turned back around to the shop because I knew the 2 lane side roads they were sending me to would be horrible, because 70 wasn't in much better shape. Moral of that is they might not like it, but it's my safety and the safety of those around me that means the most, and guess what the load got delivered the next day.

With all do respect Eric, are you paying him for the job? Sounds like your bank accounts will always be dry and I wouldn't barrow any money.
You would be better off starting for the big companies if your gonna work for that, meaning benefits and your checks would always cash.
I don't know what dryvan rates are ( I am a flatbed driver) but 600 miles at $1.30 p/m is $780.00 x .20% = $156.00 less taxes $39.00 = $120.00 per day = $600.00 per week with no benefits.
Just something to think about. -
All we know is he is getting 20%, 25 would be better, but we have know idea what kind of loads he is hauling. And he said nothing about benefits. Often the shorter runs pay better per mile. Too many unknowns in this story to advise him not to take the job.
