Quick update for those following my blog.
PA was crap on Monday. Lots of loads but lots of trucks. Ended up settling for a cheap water load going to extreme west end of PA on I-80. 180 loaded 72 empty, $550. I finally had to take a cheap load for once.
Tuesday got a quick deal 600 miles to SC for $1.90. took 4.5 hrs to get unloaded but got $60 detention for it, on a new rate con.
Then I posted my truck and got a call within 10 seconds. 320 loaded miles, 25 empty, told them $900. They said okay, never did get the rate con until 1.5 hours later. We weren't set up w them yet. They finally sent my dispatcher the rate con and then immediately called and cancelled. Transfix out of NY was the broker. Never again with these people. They wanted driver references, broker references, last 4 of my VIN, etc #### that crap.
So it's getting late like 230pm and I'm getting nervous. Dispatcher came through again for me and found a load out of the same place the other people cancelled on us from, going 380 loaded to Valdosta for $900. Not bad except I'll be 250mi from Atlanta.
Had one broker want me to go 90mi toward Charleston, SC to pick up going 220 mi to somewhere a little north of Charlotte, NC. Told the guy I was booked but that load might not work out. He gave me is direct number. So when they cancelled, I called that guy back and he still had it available. Said he was looking to move it for $450. Told him $850 was my minimum.
"What? Why!?!? How do you come up with a number like that??"
"I just got $900 on a 300 mile run. Yeah it cancelled, but I'll still probably get that today."
"Look, I got $500 in it."
"Sorry man, I have to make a profit."
"FIVE FIFTY!"
"No way. But, if I happen to get desperate later, I'll give you a call." It is a 24hr shipper.
He got real quiet. There was like 5 seconds of silence while he thought about it.
Finally he said "Fine, if you still need a load later, call me back."
Lol.
It's going to break loose.
SOON.

1.It is better, much better a strategy to post your truck and wait for them to call.
2a. Your well established and perhaps reputable MC# plays a tremendous difference. When I post my truck I don't get too many calls; my mc starts with 9...well maybe I don't post it long enough but rather keep calling myself. Anyway, I yet to take a load from a broker calling me.
2b. I was turned down with a few nice paying loads(already verbally agreed on) right after they heard what my MC# was. Simply, they need 6 months, one year, 3 years...
2c. Being a carrier out of Chicago area might have some detrimental connotations. Better be based somewhere else to instill confidence.
3.Based on your writing style and demeanor I see you as a ####y, bold and probably arrogant individual, which is a good trait when it comes down to business success prone personality - don't get offended by it, I don't mean it as an insult but rather something funny. I am told to be too soft with people and that they take advantage of me.
4. Yes, as you mentioned before, speaking plain and accent free English, having an anglo-saxon sounding name might be of some advantage at certain brokerages. This is natural and understandable, also expectable but not very hindering if they need a truck for their desired rate.
5. I will not buy a brand new truck as long as I have to exclusively rely on loadboards.
I wish you good luck and clearing that 100k. Many times, I was close to that figure, but never quite reached it yet.Lepton1, RollingRecaps, nordrunner and 4 others Thank this. -
I've been told before that I'm arrogant, but I think I'm just misunderstood. Last night in Florence some guy come up to my truck wanting to know if I had food because his card wasn't working. He wanted the 2 for $3 hot dogs.
I gave him $5 and told him to grab me one. Of course he never came back, but I held out hope. I gave up after 15 minutes. I'd rather see the best in people, and give people the benefit of the doubt. I tip the shower cleaner. I sometimes tip the Subway Sandwich Artist if they are really good. Maybe sometimes I'm a pushover - but when my entire financial future is on the line with this truck, I HAVE to bring in as much revenue as I can. Trying to get the $900 on 350 miles right now maybe it's a little bold but it's something I'm required to do for myself. Does that make me bold and arrogant because I told the broker no?
But as long as we're on this topic, let's have at it. Do arrogant people like to be criticized?
I'm giving everyone free range, those of you who have been following this, to go ahead and give me some constructive criticism. This is actually something I've been wanting. Some good feedback.
I'm not so proud that I can't change how I think or do things when confronted with a better idea.
As far as bold, well I guess I just tend to type what's on my mind. I use this thread to post my personal thoughts and feelings because I don't do that in real life very much. I'm not much of a talker. I'm a loner and I'm the kid who was always picked on and bullied. I have 1 best friend that I talk to almost daily, and a small handful of somewhat-friends. But I don't spend much time on the phone. Mostly I'm listening to drum corps, or 80s pop, or 90s alternative. Or classical music.
If my best friend would describe me, he'd probably say I'm a 12 year old in a 34yo body. I "adult" when I have to. Lately I've been having to "adult" quite often. It sucks and I get overwhelmed and have to shut the world away sometimes for a couple days and be 12 again.
But I guess Diesel Dave would say, with cowboy boots and a Marlboro hanging out of his mouth, something like "if you think you're 12 you don't belong in a truck! Yer never gonna make it! This jobs for men! Yer gonna go bankrupt!" Lol. Oh well! Don't take me too seriously, because I don't.
EDIT:
Oh and about the accent thing. I called on an XPO load today. They offered $750, no more. I ask my dispatcher if he called on that load, he said yeah they offered $800. So they offered the American guy with no foreign accent less money than the guy with the Russian accent. Ha! Us Americans are the cheap basa turds after all! HahahahahahaLast edited: Mar 23, 2017
