I know in beating a dead horse with this but i gotta say i haven't had a shipper or reciever treat me with anything but complete respect and dignity in years. Seriously since i parked the reefer and dry box and started pulling my flat exclusively i think I've ran across 2 or 3 shippers with bad attitudes.
Finally got my own truck

If you are in a high freight area with not enough trucks, Friday afternoon is pure gold. Pick a two or three day run for high dollars. Brokers and shippers start getting worried late Friday morning. By afternoon they are desperate to get that load shipped without warehouse overtime.
Friday afternoon in a dead area you might as well pack it in. I've deadheaded from Casper to OKC too many times to count on weekends. Far better to get in line for another good paying load by Sunday, than to wait until Monday to try and get a cheap load.BoyWander Thanks this. -
Maybe I'm not waiting long enough. -

How does the song go...you got to know when to ....there's so much to know I think BW is doing pretty good with the van ops. He isn't making connections but he is running. And I think he feels like he paid too much for said truck.
But he's doing it
Be Safe Out There
Captain DaveBoyWander Thanks this. -
I agree and I want BW to succeed so much! He must be running, WE MISS YOU!!!!!BoyWander Thanks this. -
Problem is, I don't know where to move or what company to sign on with. I can get my own authority plus trailer but would brokers actually take me serious?
Any honest thoughts while BW is MIA??BoyWander Thanks this. -

I'm here. Trying to make the best out of a crappy week.
Grand rapids to Memphis, 700mi $1100 had to squeeze the other $100 outta them.
Memphis to Knoxville 387mi $1050. Sat for 6 hours nobody was getting loaded. Dropped my trailer go to peelot for food and loo, came back 20 mins later they got mad I dropped trlr even though they weren't even loading, told me my load was cancelled. Broker don't know anything about it at 7pm. Came back and told me shipper said they don't cancel on people, but it's my truck and trailer so I can do what I want. His way of saying we're gonna get out of paying you a TONU fee or any kind of layover.
Whatever. Hookers knocking on my door that night. Tuesday was a terrible day. Made $0.
Blue's City Brewery. Don't ever go there. Office keeps saying I was late. Appointment at 10am. I got rate con at 1pm. They probably told every truck that. I think they just didn't have any product and were waiting for it to arrive.
Arguing with broker, he told me well that's why you're getting paid a good rate. $1050 for 387 miles, because it's a recovery load. Told the guy sir, that's a normal market rate. If I knew this was a recovery load, I woulda charged $1500.
Whatever. I'm over it. Bad broker bad shipper, my boss understood.
Wednesday took 600mi $1600 to KC. Heavy paper load. Asked the broker if he had anything coming outta memphis on Friday. He said not anymore, because he told his shippers not to give him anymore loads outta there as he was tired of taking a loss on them all. Lol.
Unloaded that early, Immediately started deadheading toward Joplin. Much better market. KC was DEAD. Loads flying off the board. NOTHING to Arkansas or TN or MS from there.
Picked up 7 pallets of water in Joplin to Sam's club Ft Smith quick on quick off $580 147 loaded. Posted truck at 2pm before I left the shipper but nothing going toward little rock. Had offers to NJ, WI, IL, CO, nope. I did offer $3300 on a load of glass bottles to NJ 1300 miles from henryetta ok. They mighta called me back but I wasn't with my phone while in the sams club unloading. I probably woulda taken it.
Deadheaded toward little rock. Now sitting 15mi from there. 530 miles $580 in revenue today.
Just trying to improvise when things go bad.
I think I'm in a good spot for a Friday. See what I can get, but I'm only at $3280 on like 1850 all miles. $2.60/mi to KC is good but KC is just a bad market. No good choices. Been there 3 times in the last 4 months and nothing good has ever come of it. I'll treat that place like everywhere else up north for the time being.
One thing about bad markets, sure, get a good rate going in. But a good rate doesn't help the fact that your choices in that market are going to be tough. It wasn't like I was gonna be able to go from KC back to memphis for $1.50. There WAS no KC to memphis today. Not to Mississippi, not to TN. Not to Alabama. There was one that popped up to MS but you know it's gone in a heartbeat and it was.
It's hot down here. What good does this Webasto heater do me now? Need AC. Have to run the truck. 82 degrees at 10:44pm. Need to figure that out.
Next week I'm on a mission for at least $7000 gross. Hope I get it. I think I will. It's high time for some really good weeks. I need them. I think I'm smart enough now to get it. Just have to stay away from beverage and other grocery loads and stick with brokers I've grown to trust, like CHR. I've NEVER had CHR cancel on me. I feel comfortable with them. They pay when they need to. But cheap when they can be, but seems like they like to strike a balance between cheap and quality. Many times they'll book a higher quality carrier for an extra $100 when given a choice even in a bad market.
One funny story from yesterday. TQL kid calls early Wednesday with a hot hot hot load of cereal. Had to go now!! Lol. 500 miles to Oklahoma City straight through. Quoted $1600. Asked if I'd do $1500. Ok fine. Where's it going? AGS OKC.
I knew exactly what AGS is. Associated grocers. Told the guy I don't wanna go there. Oh, well appointment time is 9pm FCFS. What's detention policy?? After 3am you get detention. I don't think so. What do u need? $50/hr after 2 hours after the time I actually arrive. Well that's not fair! That's not what the customer agrees to. Ok well then I want the detention paid up front. $1900 all in, no detention time. That is insane! That's asinine! Totally insane! Ok well let me know when you get it figured out. And he even admitted he wanted my truck. Needed my truck. Sorry, kid. Brokering is tough. You're gonna take a loss.
Time for bed! Wish me luck for Friday!MarkH129, Annonymous, Al. Roper and 2 others Thank this.
