To my surprise I was able to back them out by hand and they were only holding by about two threads.
I went to my tool box and grabbed the insert installation tool I made this past February and I’m happy to say it worked perfectly sinking those inserts deep in to the housing and nice and tight.
I’m thankful I looked at them and believe I was headed for certain disaster shortly if I hadn’t taken the time to check them out.
I will now put the tool on them at every oil change as part of my service program and recommend that others do the same when servicing these Detroits to avoid a disaster of an oil filter falling off.

Why not put some Loctite on it and forget it?

You could I suppose use some lock tight...
But loctite doesn’t hold up the best in a heat/ oil situation and you actually put a little heat to it if you want to take apart a fastener that it has been used on.
Also I don’t like the thought of a piece of if breaking off and going thru my oiling system.

    D.Tibbitt and singlescrewshaker Thank this.

Yea I have green, red, and blue in my tool box also.
But I’m just not comfortable using it inside an engine oiling system.
Besides if you lock them down with the tool and check them when doing an oil change they will always be tight.
They don’t loosen out of the housing when the oil filter is tight they back out when you remove the oil filter.
If you do four or five oil changes without making sure they are seated that’s when it gets critical.

Which detroits are having this problem? I ran a dd3 and a dd4 a lots of miles, serviced them myself and had them serviced on the road, and never heard of oil filter trouble?

All the series 60s as far as I know.
It’s not a wide spread problem as far as I can tell.
Just something to be mindful of when doing an oil change.

That's a great tool you made yourself there, & exactly what I was searching for 2 weeks ago when I did my pm. Can a similar tool be bought at a store, & what exactly would be the name of said tool.? Thanks..

Nevermind, I believe I found it. Didn't realize the actual name was series 60, oil filter nipple tool. :banghead: $43.50 or so. Thanks again for sharing..
