Hey everyone. Long time reader of these forums and finally saying hello. Registered for a 160 hour CDL A course today and I have to admit, it's kinda difficult to keep the excitement in and a smile off my face.
I'm looking forward to learning and getting a successful start in this industry. This forum is an awesome resource for learning and I'm grateful for it being so open and accessible.
Currently in the Hudson Valley of NY, this will be a career change for me. If anyone has any advice or just wants to say hi, it's all good and I'm glad to be here!

Welcome to the forum, congrats on your new adventure, keep us posted on how things are going for you.
WannaGoTrucks2016 Thanks this. -
Congratulations!
What school are you going to? I'm finishing up training at Sage next week. My only advice is to study as much as you possibly can especially with the pre-trip.
Good luck and post your progress if you can. -
Thanks @Scuba Steve and @Concorde class starts in a few weeks so for now I've been reading the NY CDL manual and just trying to absorb what info I can. I'll keep everyone posted with my progress.
Concorde Thanks this. -
Start submitting job applications during the first week of school; don't have to wait until graduation.
Which type trucking do you want? Get hazmat endorsement for more job opportunities.Last edited: Sep 14, 2016

Thank for the advice @Chinatown I'd really like to get into tankers, and will have my tanker, hazmat, doubles/triples endorsements upon completion of the course.
I know Schneider hires for tanker right out of school, but any suggestions for other companies based on my location? I'm also not opposed to pulling dry van or reefer to start with either. I've looked at the Freymiller website and a few others as well based on some of your advice to other newbie on here. Thanks again!Chinatown Thanks this. -
One driver that used to post on here from your area, found a tanker job right out of school by knocking on doors in the area. It was some "off the grid" company. He stayed there a year then went OTR with Quality Carriers. Cant find his last post I received, but he was doing a layover in Reno,NV
Can't remember his screen name.WannaGoTrucks2016 Thanks this. -
Trimac Transportation hires new cdl grads; it's up to the terminal manager I think.
Kearny,NJ terminal ads say they hire new cdl grads and you're probably in the hiring area. Drop in for a face to face talk with the terminal manager as soon as you can; that's what they want; not a phone call. They want to see you. Their ad says $88K for long haul.
Saw another ad in New Hempstead,NY
Try to locate their terminals and make visits before graduation. Their Elite Fleet drivers can make $100K which takes 24 months exp. to qualify.Last edited: Sep 14, 2016

Possibly that is true for your area? Or it was true at one time in the recent past?
What I found out through applying to them and there adds posted for drivers out of FL was they required 3 months experience for the tanker jobs. Also if you were to start off in their van division you wouldn't be able to switch over to tankers until 6 months...WannaGoTrucks2016 Thanks this. -
Thanks again for the suggestions...i'll have to do some door knocking then when class starts next month. Their ad for OTR tanker says new class A CDL holders within 100 miles of Keasbey or Paulsboro, NJ... so I'll have to google map it and take a ride down. Will also look into Trimac as well.Chinatown Thanks this.
