Hello my name is dan. I just recently got my CDL A in december at a school in shelton CT. ive wanted to drive trucks for a very long time and wanted to get my CDL when i was 20 but waited because i couldnt drive interstate til 21 and alot of companys want you to be 23. anyway i applied at swift cr england and stevens. I chose to go with swift because when cr england called they said i would have to go to indiana and pay $1000 for a week long training course which i dont get cuz i had my cdl so it sounded fishy to me and also i applied there and they called me back 2 days later and wanted me to go there in 4 days and told me that i was hired but i was thinking how would i be hired already when they didnt do a background check physical or drug test yet. same thing with stevens. then i read on here and alot of people ended up going there and saying people got turned away after training because of an accident or arrest they had in the past and was still expected to pay the fee. Any way to the point i went to swifts orientation on jan 22. my mentor called me yesterday and he seems like a nice guy. swifts orientation was good and the people working there are very nice. It made me feel comfortable with working for swift. anyway im leaving tomorrow morning and driving to syracuse ny and then leaving with the mentor around noon. I am excited to start driving ive been wanting to do this for so long. My goal at the company is after working for a while i would like to become a mentor because i like to teach and im a very nice guy so the trainee would be very comfortable with me and i know they would learn more from a nice guy than an a hole. Maybe one day id also like to be an O/O but before i do that i would have to save alot of money for back up and also i want to learn how to do it b4 i jump in because i read alot of poeple failing being an o/o from just jumping into it with out any research. Any way my mentor has a laptop and internet service so i will update daily on my experience.
    Thanks all for reading
    Dan

Welcome to the party! Don't think that just because your mentor has wireless service, that he will let you use it.My son's mentor has the same but my som has to post from his phone(he's got internet on it).As soon as he gets home time (been gone 7 weeks now)we're going shopping for a laptop and blue tooth,it will really help to pass the downtime if he has his own.

so a little update here.. I left sunday and drove my first day on monday.. i did good but a little trouble at first shifting but got the hang of it after a while.. my mentor is the koolest guy. he is so nice on tuesday night we stopped at his sisters house and spent the night there.. they all were very welcoming. on thursday i got a phone call from a local job that one of my friends works at and he got them to give me an interview so i talked to my mentor about it and he got a load back to the terminal he wanted a couple days off anyway. so it works out because i have the interview/driving test on tuesday and if i dont get the local job then ill drive back to the terminal and go back out with him. but so far i am liking it. the few things i dont like are the food prices at truck stops are outrageous and not being able to shower everyday.
