I am wanting to become an OTR truck driver, I've been reading these forums off and on for the past few months and feel like I would love to give the life of a trucker my best shot. I live in north eastern Kansas and have found a school to get my CDL right in my neck of the woods, Road Masters in KCMO. The only thing stopping me is the cost, I'm sure I would qualify for their loan of around $6500 for the 4 week course, however I would rather get assistance for it and not be tied down to a loan. I tried for a Pell grant, but the course is too short to qualify apparently. Making a short story long, sorry. Does anyone know of a program/grant/scholarship that I could tap in order to get the ball rolling?
Thanks in advance to any help that you all give me.

this isn't going to be the answer you're looking for....but $6500 for 4 weeks of schooling? truck drivers (the ones who haven't gotten laid off yet) aren't making any money. it's been that way for years and is getting worse. the only ones in the trucking industry cleaning up right now are the trucking schools. they're making money left and right these days.

You know, I'm not saying what you said isn't true, but I either hear that the industry is doing fine and projected to get a lot better, or that it sucks and is only getting worse. I've also got to wonder how much money the drivers who make nothing are making. Because $40,000 a year might seem like a lot to one person and nothing to another. I understand that there will always be two extremes to everything, but where can a guy who really wants to know the truth of it get the right answers.

Most aid will require a 16 week course.. you might check with work force and see if they have any money left..it takes a couple months to get the grant...but they will pay for most of it.. I have to agree.. some ppl think 40000 is not much.. but when you are making 14000 a year.. 25 or 30 is nothing to sneeze at..lol

Check your state unemployment. Some states will pay for your training if you're unemployed.
