Buying an older pre emissions truck and just don't go into Cali.
Buying a newer truck under warranty still.
Or leasing a truck.
Which way taking into account break downs, taxes etc would you do the best financially?
Financially which route works out best in becoming an O/O?

An old truck that is 20% the cost of a new one, will still give you many years, and never breaks down.

I've heard everything newer than that breaks down all the time.
Even as a company driver I've seen a lot of issues on new trucks -

A new truck under warranty can break down. Husband had a lease International 2012 that liked to stay in the shop. He was in Sparks, NV for almost a week the one round, at his cost for motel, etc, and no pay while broke down. Under warranty, but you still have to pay the truck payment and insurance.
Older truck no warranty on it most likely, you pay out of your pocket.
And don't forget tows come out of your pocket too if broken down.
Have heard of Penske rentals, they sound good on the internet sales pitch, husband had run across a man who had one and like the deal. But??? that is just one person.281ric Thanks this. -
Got two 96s both had a few problems here and there but the low cost of buying them outright made it well worth the expenses of fixing. You can buy used and put the other that would have been toward a new and fix it for less than a new one. But get a good mechanic to look it over really close.
New will break down old will break down old just cost less before the break down and no payment to worry about while broke down.

Unless you live in California I would just forget them and go with a pre emissions motor. The freight rates going into Cali and coming out does not justify the problems with them emission motors. We would all love to save the environment, but not many would sacrifice their families well being in the meantime. Look around for a series 60 detroit in an aerodyne type truck. Great fuel economy and cheaper parts.

i suggest getting an older truck, making sure it is a sound truck, money aside for repairs

I think it depends on your business plan and your skill set. I'm not a phenomenal mechanic; I can change oil and do most minor \moderate stuff, but nothing really technical. I prefer to buy new or newish with a warranty. I'm looking to buy next year and will probably go from a 2008 to a 2014 or newer Volvo with a good warranty. I do go to California enough to pay for it, though. Like everything else here, it depends on you and your business.
