An old school cool largecar and then hammer down coast to coast... sorry wrong time period.
The best option is a preemission well maintained truck with a preferable fresh or recent overhaul.

IMO the less you can initially get started for the better. Newer trucks break down just as much if not more than older trucks. An older truck with 600k-800k could either be a gold mine with everything that was going to break already fixed,.. or a truck that will become a time bomb with everything YET to break.

As always,.. go over the truck either personally or with/at a certified mechanic. Maintenance records, dyno results, over all condition inside and out would be determining factors to me.

I bought an older truck with 900k. I was a company driver in the truck for 8 months before I decided to finally buy it. Truck was as reliable as an old dog for me. No problems what so ever. Having a few issues now with it. But nothing that is the end of the world. Nothing mechanical anyway. I'm at 1.1 million miles now. I only paid $20k for the truck. I'm looking at $5k for ECM and associated repairs that could have been avoided if the shop I had to some PM services had done their job. I blame myself for not going over everything they said they did.

I wouldnt let an older truck in good condition deter you. I went in this pretty cheap. Doing well. California? Pfft,.. I dont need them. But I digress,.. my truck is an 05 and I have done a few runs into Cali and they never stopped or check me. I went in and out with out issue.
