The speed is nothing going upgrade. You shift by RPM telling you where the engine is at it's best torque. Something around 1200 or so you have to downshift to maintain power going upgrade.

    The speed does not matter.

The reason is you are managing a non synchronized transmission. It has to match what you are trying to do with the engine and you are the synchronizer. Cars and small trucks do this automatically within limits.

10 speeds are good starter transmissions but by and large are not that good upgrade.

The main thing with automatics is you don't test in one many states if not all of them will put a restriction against you for auto only on your CDL.

Never downshift at the bottom of a hill, wait until your truck bogs down and then downshift.
Every truck is different on what speed to shift at,

    he he.

    Go for it.

Keep in mind whatever gear you come off the top at is the gear you generally come down at. But not always. Anyone can get up a hill. It's the getting down that gets good.

I did really good today in the mountains. We it was more like a test. Coming down on I 24 west of Tennessee / Alabama. Tomorrow I'm going to Johnson City Tennessee with a loaded trailer. To I had a empty trailer. I can't wait to make the mountains eat my dust

    Never get overconfident.

It is nice to have that spirit but on a bad day if you don't watch it over you go.

When I started schooling the instructors discovered I was afraid of mountains. When they were done with me, they flipped it turning me into a monster. But those little hills compared to what is out there around the USA.

Even better add ice. Sometimes if it is plain just too dangerous you are better off waiting a while until the plows have had a chance to work on it now and then.
