Self-preservation usually overrules prior intent to grab what one may wish to grab on the way out the door. Sure, it would have been nice to empty all of your personal belongings...but in an emergency there is rarely time to do that. If it isn't in your pocket, it's probably going to get left behind when you've got to get out in a hurry. Heck, most of the time I'm inside and standing in line to pay for something when I remember my wallet...still in the truck. No bones about it, if I found myself in a similar situation, I'd probably be standing there (at a safe distance) watching it burn and suddenly think "CRAP...MY WALLET!!!" too. Stuff happens, and luckily (most) stuff is replaceable. You ain't. As long as YOU got out, the rest is just "stuff".

Just spoke to my company, they tell me that the truck wasn't properly insured, and that they may not even be covered for the loss. Now something smells fishy in this. How was the truck even registered? AND how was it even allowed to continue operating? Wouldn't DOT, DMV, and other organizations have caught this, and demanded it be corrected?

They are already running illegal by paying 1099. You expect them to be legal in other areas of their business?
Yet one of the many examples of why no one should accept a 1099 unless you own (lease) the truck....

You don't have to have comprehensive (fire and theft) or collision insurance to truck, just liability and cargo.

It doesn't sound like they had liability. Talking about how the truck is a complete loss, and isurance company doesn't want to pay out.

That's not liability.Liability is if you do damage to some one else, that's required.Comprehensive is fire, theft, tree falling on your truck, etc.Only required if truck has a lienholder, financed.

And it sounds like it was financed, maybe not through a bank to. Made comment to me that he was still paying for the truck.

Had a truck catch fire two rows down from me about four or five months ago. Wild night for sure. Anyway, glad you made it out. From what I can gather about the insurance, you'll likely be able to furnish your own new belongings long before this company, or their supposed insurance company pays out. Bottom line is this, you made it out of a truck that basically burst into flames.

I understand that you may be frustrated with the loss of your belongings, and/or the way the company is beginning to handle this, but its important to remember you get to live another day to get behind the wheel again. Some people don't. I'm not going to say you are lucky because I didn't see the whole thing go down, but there is a pretty good chance had you not thought as quickly as you did you wouldn't be here to post about it.

I say you drink a beer, water, or whatever your fancy, and enjoy the evening. Because tomorrow is never guaranteed. Glad you are safe and thank you for sharing your story. My truck catching fire while I sleep is one of my worst nightmares. I sleep with my fire extinguisher within my reach so that in the event something does happen I might be able to make it out by quickly laying down a path to escape out the door.

I'm a company driver and my stuff is not covered under their policy, however my renters insurance covers it, minus the deductible.
All drivers might want to know beforehand what their responsibilitys arrrrggghh

I had a truck get broken into when I was first starting out as a company driver. Personal items were covered by my renters insurance policy I had on my residence. "Business" related items (such as the CB) were not covered.
