Anybody ever heard of "being on call"? I don't know anything about this situation, but I'm not going to be so quick to defend the driver on this matter, because to terminate, there must have been something else to the story IMO. Lot's of "new guys" end up being on-call certain times of the day during their time off at large food service operations to cover for "sick" hands with more seniority.

They did you a favor man...honestly and they have only hurt themselves.
A typical motor carrier though, high turnover through mindless actions leave managers whining about empty seats so they hire a recruiter. The dog continues to chase his tail !
Irony here is MC management in general believes ADDITIONAL oppression is the answer to handling drivers never seeing the error of their ways........HeWhoMustNotBeNamed Thanks this. -

He said he was with a food service carrier, and these are not typically "bottom feeder" and do have "absolutely must go" level of service, as well as a lot of drivers, many more dependable then others. And I could see them having off duty at-home drivers "on call"

My boss will text me at home. I know to check my texts the day before.
I can check them on my time schedule. I usually send a simple OK back when
ever I read it so he knows that I did receive the message.
I have to admit though that if my company fired me over not answering
my personal cell phone on my day off. I would be more than happy to
find another job. I did food service for over two years. My boss
would have never fired a driver for something like that. He knew
how hard we worked to get our routes done, he was happy to see
me show up for work every monday morning.Lonesome and lagbrosdetmi Thank this. -
I email at 7am, he replies, after he has the emergency loads covered and then gets to check his email (usually in 15 minutes or less), an acknowledgement stating he will send trip info when they have a daily plan worked up.
Now if they will get the Qualcom phone App finished that will be even better!

Otherwise, no. If he were NOT told of this being this company's MO, then he may have a case for legal action against this turd of an outfit, assuming he'd even be interested. I could hardly blame him of he weren't.Lonesome Thanks this. -
Totally unacceptable, IMO.bottomdumpin Thanks this. -
