Called Swift this A.M. about my application and the recruiter was like, "When do you want to start classes?".
So, before I do that, I need to make sure I've covered everything.
These things on the Student Closing Form I need clarified a bit:
"3. Housing is not a part of the cost of tuition. All students that need housing must sign a Housing Agreement. Students have the option to arrange housing on their behalf."
I haven't found the Housing Agreement yet. Does Swift NOT pay for housing? How much will that run?
"9. If unemployed for more than 60 days, bring 2 notarized letters stating why"
What exactly do they want here? A letter from my mother stating that I've been out of work because no one has hired me? A letter from a place that turned down my application? Jeez, I WISH I could get a notarized letter from a company stating why they didn't hire me...
I need an example here.
"10. Please make sure you have listed all convictions (misdemeanor or felony) on your application. Detailed
background investigations will be conducted prior to your arrival."
South Carolina has this thing called PreTrial Intervention for 1st time offenders. Some dumb thing I did as a juvenile got me into that. I did a "scared straight" trip to a correctional facility, time with a counselor, and some community service. My record AFAIK was expunged.
Seems as though if this is "Pre Trial", then I can't have been "convicted" of anything, but knowing how the law words things, maybe a conviction is automatic, blah blah blah.
Anyone know about this issue, specific to South Carolina, or this kind of program? Probably just better to say up front that I was in that program?
"22. Any student found with alcohol or a person of the opposite sex in their room at any time will be terminated
and sent home immediately."
Is Drano considered Alcohol?
What if the alcohol isn't for drinking, but for sterilizing needles?
What if it's a guy who just looks like a girl?
Are drinking and women ok if I'm in someone else's room?

Will answer the ones I can and I am sure someone will come along to answer the rest. Swift will cover the housing but it will be tacked onto your loan so you will pay it back. You will need to bring money to buy your own food etc.
As for the drinking. They are very serious about this. And they often do find out. When hubby was in school, the day before his class went to test for their cdl's, 3 students went to a bar and had a few. They were terminated the next morning. And no they didn't get to test for cdl and yes they still had to pay back the entire loan.Artbroken and scottied67 Thank this. -
I actually called Swift over the summer to "inquire" about a few things--one of which was the 60-day notarized letter thing. The gal told me they're not demanding that right now. (I think she said if it had been a year or more they would need it, but it's been months since this phone call so I'd check on that yourself.)

Housing is an extra "loan". Its 500.00. Here is what I was sent in the info about Millington school.
We will cover your hotel expenses up front, however, the cost of the hotel ($500.00) will be given to you on a loan which will be repaid at $23.00 per week for 6 months beginning when you have upgraded to solo status
Students board at a reputable efficiency Hotel / Apartment complex in the-Housing
Academy area. Transportation will be provided to and from the Academy at
assigned times.
Students reside in a room with 1-3 other students of the same gender. The
accommodations are non-smoking only. All married couples must provide proof
of marriage to room together.
It is the responsibility of each Student to comply with all rules and regulations
of the Hotel / Apartment complex and the Swift Driving Academy.
The Hotel / Apartment complex will provide coin laundry facilities for the
Students.
Swift Driving Academy, Swift Transportation, and the efficiency Hotel /
Apartments are not responsible for lost or stolen items. Please leave any
un-necessary items of value at home.
Hope this helps.Artbroken Thanks this. -
That actually seems pretty reasonable for 4 weeks of lodging. I wouldn't pay it up front anyway, in case you didn't pass.
Do they give you the option of driving your own vehicle to the academy if it's far(ish) away, or do they require you to Greyhound it? I would have to get to Lewiston, ID from Portland, OR. (for instance.) -
The info I have just says after I complete all the requirements for CDL training to let them know and they will order my greyhound ticket. It does say that for orientation they will make bus arrangements or if I drive to keep all gas reciepts (up to the price of a bus ticket) to be reimbursed into your paycheck.
Edited to add:
12. A Swift Shuttle Van Or Bus will pick you up upon arrival at the Greyhound Terminal in Memphis, TN. The Shuttle will run every 3-5 hours. The first day will be in Memphis for paperwork. All lodging will be at the Admirality Inn in Millington, TN. The contact information for the hotel is:
13. Monday morning at 5:00 amthe Academy bus will pick you up. If driving please report to the Memphis Wellness Center before 6:00 am. Bring a jacket/ sweater. The classrooms can be cold.Last edited: Jan 12, 2011

Thanks, I just received my forms in email. It does say 365 days for the notarized letter thing, and the rest that JLM mentioned.

Watching training videos now. I hate training videos.
A little constructive criticism:
Training videos are supposed to complement written material, not repeat it verbatim. It makes no sense to have a narrator read out loud for an hour from a text you could read on your own in 2 minutes.
If you must hire a narrator, please don't hire some guy from the office. He gets lost in the script, and makes up his own words like english is his second language.
Hire a pro.
Thanks.scottied67 and just lil me Thank this.
