John i've been where u are as well, and still can't back but i've not been driving in 6 yrs, didn't give myself the chance to try to get it right. So i'm curious to see what you think and how you did. The best advice i can give, is DO NOT let it intimidate you.

What worked well for me was simply take note of the distance your driver's side trailer tire is from the boundry line and maintain that distance with very suttle movements of the steering wheel. When I say suttle, I mean if my right hand was on top of the wheel at 12:00, I'd keep the wheel between 11:00 and 1:00. The students that struggle with this elementary exercise simply over-steer.

And don't turn the steering wheel all the way to the left as far as it can go when you see the trailer just starting to bend towards your left mirror.

Ha...I remember it like it was yesterday!
Dont sweat it brotha..It will come to you..
It took me longer to learn then I would have liked.
But 8 years later I made it! Like you will, I'm sure..Good Luck -
Like the others have said: relax.
That said, here's my method of backing: Turn toward too much. Here's what it means: Look in your mirrors and place your hand at the top of the wheel. Too much trailer on the left side? Turn your wheel (the top) 1/4 turn to the left. Use small movements of the wheel.
Don't worry, your instructors have seen it all and will help you get it right. You'll be fine.
