Are you liking the auto more? I mean it seems so from your statement. I only ask because of the 2 (Older) auto shifts that I drove,.. I didnt like them at all. The Mack I test drove, I almost hit a car while at a traffic light. I was expecting the light to change, stepped on the go pedal, realized my mistake, but when I stepped on the brake it wouldnt release immediately and almost drove me into the back of a car. Both me and the sales guy almost messed our pants over that. I was immediately turned off to an auto.
I'm sure they work better today, but I think I enjoy rowing my own gears more than I would the truck doing it for me. My pickup at home is the only automatic we have and the only reason is because GM does not offer a manual with the 5.3. I didnt want the smaller 4.8, nor did I want to step up to a 3/4 ton to get a manual with the 6.2. Its a love hate thing,.. I love my pickup, just wish I had a clutch.

First new truck, need some input.

Have you considered Western Star? Put a DD16 with it and, IMHO, you have the finest truck out there.
Kenworths are fantastic rides!! I've had two new ones. When it came time to update for California I had to make a decision.....EVERY dealer I visited with had nothing but problems with Cummins. Hopefully that has changed in the past 3 years. Anyway I found a Star with a DD15 spec'd out with almost everything I'd spec plus some items I wouldn't have thought of and took the plunge. A little heavier then I'd like but nothing that was a deal breaker. So far with a couple thousand miles shy of 300k I've NOTHING go wrong with the engine. Last IFTA quarter was 6.36 running west with a curtain van. Oh and it's got a 13spd married to 3:42's rolling on 11R-22.5 rubber. -
Then go spend $25 for the three pulls from NADA and you will see it's fact.
If I had some fool in front of me willing to pay a premium for a 18spd I'd take his or her money as well. Next time I buy a used truck I'll have to take you with me, I won't go by NADA I'll let you advise me cause you know what the average joe wants, & that way I can pay a premium for having all these extras like, mirrors, a windshield, doors, tires and such.
Hopefully the OP will do his homework from actual data, which is what NADA is!! But hey who knows, maybe he'll find a dealer out there when he trades it in, that gives bonus money for what the average joe wants. What I love about technology is guys like you are so easy to discredit. My friend's uncle's neice's kid's brother said a 18spd is worth more on a trade.lol
BTW banks use these numbers as well, try going into a bank for something valued at $10,000 and telling them you want a loan for $20,000 because it's something the average joe would pay!!Last edited: Sep 21, 2014

Nice thing about a CB is that when you dont like what the other guy is saying, you let him have the last word. Then you turn it off.
Over and out good buddy.

Mastertech, MACK E-6 and Lucar Thank this.

get the KW,,if you get the MX PACCAR engine you will be stuck going to a KW or Pete dealer for engine work,,if you get the cummins you can go to many more Cummins authorized service dealers for repairs and warranty,,MX engines don't pull as good on the hills, get the 18 if you can but no less than a 13,,an 18 will give you more options for future hauling plus better performance,, problem with freightliner is spec'd the same as a KW new the resale will be much less.
" Years ago a friend who ran a MACK dealer told me that you don't know what a truck really cost you until the day you sell it"
You might keep it for years or decide to sell it next month or next year. Hard to sell a Freightliner when most used truck buyers first choice is a Peterbilt or a Kenworth and the flooded market of used Freightliners from big fleets run down the resale value of all used Freightliners.
If you order spend the extra $300 for an in cab king pin release and remote door locks,,
get a quote from wells fargo equip finance,,good people to work with and good finance rates,,you should be able to get a 5% APR loan and make sure you get an amatorized loan so if you pay it off early you will only pay interest on the time you had the loan,,you have to ask for this,,Slingingbullets Thanks this. -
Yeah, this tranny is lightyears better than the regular Ultrashift, it really does respond like a regular auto in your pick up....especially in low speed backing situations (notoriously bad in the older Ultrashift).....I really wish now I could drive a detroit with the new detroit tranny.....(a Coronado with a DD 15, D12 tranny, 3.30 rears, and all the gauges....flat top "72XT......fridge, microwave, flat screen...) sorry, now i'm dreaming out loud....
PS....the trick to these auto's seems to be to depress the gas pedal like you have an egg under it....mash it and they're dogs.... -
What "money spent" are you talking about?? An 18 vs. a 13 is less than a grand difference on a new truck......so in the scheme of things it's peanuts.Mastertech Thanks this.
