Not worth it.
All he is going to do is defend his initial statement with what he feels is a convincing argument.
What should be obvious to you and I is apparently difficult to understand.
I'm probably in trouble just for voicing my opinion about it,.. LOL

I still stand by my first post to put in an 18 speed. Once you have driven one for a while you will understand what it means to have that 1/2 gear in the lower end. You could be cruising at optimum RPM or lugging the motor and the other option is to run at a higher rpm. Being able to drop from high range to low range with only the flip of a switch does wonders at all speeds for that little umph to get up the hill or dropping a little because of traffic.
Now as a truck dealer, I know that I could move an 18 speed faster than a 13. The reason being is that it is a little overkill for those looking for a 10 speed but not enough for those looking for a heavy haul application. EVERY day that truck sits on the lot it costs money. All holding of inventory costs money because it ties up a certain amount that can not be out there making more. So if I was a dealer, I would give you more for an 18 speed because I can move it faster than a 13. The cost of inventory plays a big part in what the dealer will give you. We are not talking 5-10k difference but there is a difference. KBB can put any value they want on a truck but they can not tell you how long it will take you to sell it.
I also see 18 speeds selling faster than 13 speeds in comparable trucks all the time. Like I said before, I do not even look at a truck unless it has an 18 speed.cowboy_tech, Lucar and Hurst Thank this. -
In the end it's up to the OP what to buy, he's gotta be happy. I drove a 18 for over 1/2 million miles with 3.36 gears & your in the upper half around 17-20mph, you don't need 8 gears to get to 20mph, which is why those of us that have driven them say they never split the lower half. If the rest of the truck isn't spec'd & rated for HH then a 18 isn't needed either, there is allot more to a HH truck other than a 18 spd. So as a buyer I wouldn't pay more for a 18 spd because I know I don't need it on a 80k truck. As a owner I don't get into the habit of throwing money at something I don't need, I would take that money and put it to something useful such as a bunk heater, but that's me.

Now that we have that 100% clear, I trust that we can ALL move past this.SMTatham Thanks this. -
Hello, I'm actually leaning heavily towards getting newer Freightliners due to CARB and also old equipment breaking down and I hadn't thought about resale value. Is there a huge difference in resale btwn FRT and KW? Can this be quanitified at all like saying: FTR will depreciate 20% more at the 3 year (or whatever year) mark than a KW?Last edited: Oct 9, 2014
