Once again you guys are awesome. These are things I'm sure the terminal will train me and supposedly they're extremely serious about safety there(Rhode Island) a days worth of safety videos and 2 weeks supervised...every day. Nervous but extremely excited, I've always had a craving for anything tanker involved. Moving from $18 to $23(by the hour) doing this move so I'm pretty happy about it. I'll send pictures of the tanker tomorrow so I can get some more info on what to keep tabs on. The diesel? I do blacktop everyday of course I have some "hiding"... tanker has a burner on it as well. I drained out the water inside and it's getting thouroughly inspected throughout this week before I do ANYTHING. Company has been hiring JP Noonan on the daily so they take everything I say to heart and move on it quickly...a lot of money will be saved for sure. a huge plus being the only guy out of 100 people who has a Hazmat/TWIC

I stumbled upon this post just browsing TTR. I know NOTHING of hauling asphalt, which apparently will be evident in my question. Why is water and liquid asphalt such a volatile mix?

I asked one of the workers and he said its because when water turns to steam it expands by a thousand times or more. So when the hot 300 degree asphalt contacts water it instantly turns it into steam. The tar is on top of the water and the only escape is though the 2 ft manhole cover so it turns into a giant 300 degree fountain. The incident l saw had streamers of tar hanging off the street light like tinsel. Street lights are usually 15 feet off the ground? You get the idea anyhow.
