most states if not all will require you to have a dot # either yours or who you are leased too. it's fine to use landstars they have 3 I think ask recruiting your on expiditer so different than mine ... ranger

I paid sales tax on semi in Florida. Just saying.

ohio no sales tax on buisness purchase but requires you to have a dot number. ... no sales tax on repairs either
-
2290 is federal so it's the same every where land star will require you to have it paid up to date .... that takes a couple of weeks to go through unless you file through express truck tax or similar biz

Thanks for all your replies. It seems like some of you guys have gotten the title in your own home state or in a state that is not your home state. I take it it doesn't really matter?
I tried pricing Georgia's IRP fees vs Landstar's base plate fees and Georgia is a lot cheaper, but Georgia makes you pay some TAVT tax (Title Ad Valorem Tax) on any vehicle that needs a title. It is a one time fee instead of a recurrent annual fee. I believe it is separate from Sales tax but I'm not sure. It is around 7%.
If I never try to get it registered or titled in Georgia, is that a way to avoid having to pay that TAVT tax? -
Just realized it’s a straight truck, under 55,000 lbs , no 2290 needed.
Bean Jr. Thanks this. -
Is there a benefit to having the dealer give me an instant title (for almost $200) or can I just go and get the title in my name myself for Michigan?
If I take the original title and want to title it in Georgia, I may have to pay a Title Ad Valorem Tax (TAVT) which I think is 7% and I'm not sure if that counts as Sales tax. Georgia does have a form that can exempt you from paying the TAVT, but you have to list MC number, and it isn't clear whether it's your own (under your own authority) or leasing your truck onto a carrier.

Let the dealer get the title, they know how so don’t worry about. LS will want a copy of bill of sale and title, that’s easy but they will want a inspection from a LS approved site. You do not have to take truck to orientation so that can help some logistics problems.
You aren’t the first to do this ,Bean Jr. Thanks this.
