First trucking job experience was a nightmare. looking for advice.

That reminds me of a friend I worked with at a reefer company. He has 3 grown children and his wife divorced him to marry her supervisor at work. During the divorce proceedings it was discovered he isn't the father of any of the 3 children; his wife's supervisor at work fathered them. After the divorce was final, the wife's supervisor at work refused to marry her and decided to stay with his own wife. Last I heard about my friend, he is planning to retire and move to the Philippines.

 

Some trucking company CDL programs, you don't need any money. They pay for transportation to the school and provide food and lodging plus the job after graduation. Celadon provides 3 meals a day and Southern provides one or two. Not sure about Swift.

Reefer refers to a refrigerated trailer, used for food and other things that need to be kept cold during their journey wherever in the truck.

There are options and lots of good advice here. You can get your A license through a company training program. They'll ship you out and put you up in a motel and provide some meals while you train. Don't let the woman trip you up. This might sound harsh, but it's your life. Live it.
By the way, it takes guts to drive in NYC. Lots of drivers are afraid to do it...

Well don't burn yourself or your license up working for crappy companies like this one. If the company culture sends you out there and the owners don't really care what happens to you, you're likely to accumulate tickets, accidents, failed inspections, fines, and more, and will eventually become unhireable anywhere.
There are OTR companies that do the same thing, it's just how they roll. Company culture. The owners want their payday and don't give a flip about the drivers they churn through. Stay away from these kinds of outfits. The one you got stuck with sounds like a real bucket of snot. lol. Getting fired there is likely a blessing in disguise.

If you want to drive, just keep moving forward and explain the circumstances if asked.
Drivers are in high demand right now, but protect your CDL because a clean license is your ATM card.
Look out for the bottom feeder companies. Maybe a more "civilized" place like PA would be better to drive/work.
