What can I expect in my first year. What is the pay for first year drivers in otr, local and regional routes. I'm going to school and they in big with Werner. What are some good companies to work for that will hire someone with no experience. The reason I'm asking is this school I'm going to has a high pre hire rate and I want to know what to look for. Thanks in advance.

OTR is easiest to get into for new CDL. Ballpark .32 cents per mile x 2500 miles per week. Your first year is all about gaining experience. Check glassdoor and indeed websites for company reviews and pick one with decent ratings that has parking near you. The first year is the worst but it can be ok if you find the right company. Sharing a truck with a trainer is the worst of all. So once you get your own truck it all gets better from there. A few months to get comfortable and one day you will suddenly realize that you no longer feel like a noob.
Think about doing reefer your first year. More hassles but it looks better than dryvan on a resume. Try to stick with one company for the full 12 months. But if you absolutely cannot stand your first company and need to leave early, do it at 6 months. You want to avoid keeping a jobs for less than 6 months. So 2 stretches of 6 months each at 2 companies is still not too bad for a first year. A 9 month stretch and a 3 month stretch isn't as good. 6 is the magic number. And don't have any accidents. Better to have a late delivery rather than risk an accident.Last edited: Oct 10, 2017

Location please?

If you're in the right location and have all the endorsements it's pretty easy to make $60K first year. -

The big company around here is Werner. I just want to make the best educated decision I can make. Also plan on doing all the endorsements I can. Would it make sense to specialize in one area or do a little of everything?
x1Heavy Thanks this. -
Try these:
Tyson Foods - some make $60K+
Trimac Transportation - need tanker/hazmat endorsement & TWIC ID Card. Trimac is running ads for new cdl grads. This is a $60K - $65K job.
Butler Transport - RECENT GRADUATE REQUIREMENTS
- Class A CDL
- 21 years of age
- No at fault accidents in the last 3 years
Grand Island Express-$57K Average Income for company drivers with top earners making $83K.
Freymiller - new grads go thru their "Restore Program" described on the website.
Magnum Ltd. - refrigerated trucking with good paychecks. Probably a steady $1000 + weekly.
Navajo Express - Denver,CO
Schuster - nations largest ice cream hauler. Based in Iowa.
Britton Transport - smaller carrier with excellent reputation
A&A Express - Brandon,SD
Contract Freighters - www.cfidrive.com - coast to coast dry van.
If you're already in school, submit online applications now; don't wait until graduation.

You will find something. The problem is that the bride will have something nice and something not so nice. Many newbies hold the nose and endure 12 weeks of abuse. Then 18 months then 24. If you make it 36 months???
You will write yourself a golden ticket. Absolutely have your life, livelhood and entire future in your hands. First class people calling you for work that borders on fantasy of the most jaded of ex dispatchers... -
