Sorry but there has to be some exceptions. I find it hard to believe that the only good truck to buy is a 1999-2001 truck this day and age. I see 2007 trucks with 1+ million miles, how are they getting to those numbers if they are always broken. I think an acceptable risk is pre-2008. I have friend truckers with Freightliners 2007 Det 60 no issues, got another with a T2000 2007 C15 no issues at all.

The question is do you need to be California legal, emissions wise. If no, get a truck with no dpf. If yes, get preferably dpf+def, but if you must get dpf only get a Cummins or detroit. Dont buy any engine made by the truck maker, as in paccar mx or international maxxforce. Volvo seems to do ok, but I don't think anyone rebuilds them. Run it for 700,000, maybe 1 m or more then throw away. The question is more for what you intend to use the truck for ..

A friend I've know for ever works in a dealers shop in Little Rock and had been working on diesels forever. Just recently I asked him what was the best and worst engines. He stated, "That they had less problems from the Cummings and the most problems from the Paccars engines.

Flatbed to midwest north and east, nothing from TX to California so not worried about emissions compliance there.

Then its a no brainer. Get 2007 or older, no dpf on it. Cat Cummins or Detroit they are all good motors. Maybe even consider a glider.

Great advice guys. The found consensus helps quite a bit. I won't be driving, we will be owners (wife and I) so will hire a driver, and the last thing we want is to put somebody we hire through a breakdown in some far forsaken place. We were that close to jumping head first on a 2010 T660 C15 because of the low miles and low cost. That could have been disastrous!

Maxxforce 13 is a MAN D20 engine (German engine around since 2004, but with Navistar programming)
Maxxforce 15 is based on a Caterpillar C15 bottom end but used a Navistar top end/programming

I would avoid both, though I do think the 2011-2014 Maxxforce 13s aren't as bad as the 2008-2010.

I dont know where to start, a little bad info in your post, but 04 - 05 C15 ACCERT does not have a DPF filter. And of the C15 ACCERT's with the DPF, most regen perfectly fine going down the road. The ARD head ignites fuel from an injector that blasts into the exhaust and burns out the soot in the filter. I've done regens in the dead of winter while the temp gauge showed barely 170f. Where most of the problems with the later ACCERTs were from trucks that did a lot of idling and or trucks that ran local runs and did not see extended interstate speeds. I can remember idling over night to run the AC and by morning the manual regen code was plastered on the dash.

As far as the pre DPF ACCERT motors, I own a 2005 Columbia with a BXS C15 ACCERT. I bought the truck with 994k mi,.. I am now just over 1.2 million mi. Not one single mechanical problem. Electrical, wires, hoses etc,.. yes. Basically things that fall under general maintenance with something 10 yrs old. My C15 has been fantastic. As long as you abide by the regular maintenance these engines need, they will perform very well with minimal issues or problems.

I have no hesitation buying another pre DPF ACCERT. I know what to expect and look for now. Wiring harness issues, various sensors that can cause issues, regular valve train maintenance and these are very easy going motors.
