Similar experience as well. I had an 07 Pete with a C15 550hp Cat. Very good engine. Currently have an 07 Western Star with C13 470hp also giving very good service. Both engines are pre DPF (engine mfg. dates of 2006).
I have heard that some 07 trucks have the DPF but none of the ones I have looked at have it. Maybe because the engine manufacture dates were in 06. I would NOT buy a 2008-2010 model unless it was a glider with a pre emission engine.
Fist new Truck Kenworth 2010 T660 C15 475, 521000 miles.

Spend a couple of days reading here; http://rawze.com/forums/index.php
and figure out if you are both willing and capable to do at least 80% of the maintenance your self and you will need a garage to do the other 20% that is NOT a factory shop. There is a ton of excellent info out there but you need to do most of the work your self to be profitable. -
I've got an 07 Pete with the C15, pre DPF. Been a good motor so far, has 824k on it. It's a 475 MXS serial number. No major mechanical probs. pulling reefers and vans does pretty well on fuel. Would not hesitate to buy another one, but a glider with a Detroit or an older Cat would not be out of the question.

I'm not an expert, is there an obvious way to see the DPF part, anyone has a pic so I stay clear away from it?

Look on google images for "C15 ARD head" and you should get a good example of what to look for.
Pretty much any 07 C15 and newer will have the DPF system. I was always under the assumption that 06 had it also.. but I am not any kind of expert on the subject. Just sharing my own personal experience and trying to be helpful.
Edit:
This is the best example I found. See what looks almost like a distributor behind the turbo? Thats the ARD head. If you see that, it will be a DPF equipped C15.

What ever you buy, stay away from buying anything used "with auto transmision"

I prefer the clutch.. even in stop and go traffic.
I test drove an older Volvo 02 or 03 that had an auto. I was just curious. Was at a red light. I saw the other light turn red and stepped on it to go but only the turn lane got the green. I stepped on the brake and it didnt want to release and stop. It was like the truck had a mind of its own. I had to mash the brake as hard as I could to stop truck from rear ending the car in front of me. Not sure who freaked out more.. me or the sales guy. That experience nailed the coffin lid shut on me ever owning an auto.
I hear the newer auto's are much better and they resolved many things. They say its just like driving a car. Plus more than a few posts here on TTR from guys praising the new automatics and say they are converted.
But yeah.. I agree on the older ones. Meh...

There are no '07 tractors with DPF's. That was the last year for the model 379 you will never find a 379 with a factory equipped DPF. In '08 the 389's came out and all had DPF's. Volvo, Freightliner, Mack, etc, etc no-one put DPF motors in '07 tractors. The reason why is the "07 models" were all built in 2006 that's the emissions they had to meet. 08's were built in 2007.
