I went over 1.3 mil miles. but if I had my engine apart at 800,000. my only thought would be, going with oem or aftermarket kit.

toss in a 800 marine cam while your at it. Will give you more power and raise your MPG by .5

No joke, just ask Mr. Haney. 800 cam, 7cz pistons and injectors and you'll be set.

My husband and I just settled on a 1995 379 Pete. Needs some attention, but the thing runs like a wildcat, shifted smooth, and the jake brake almost threw me out of my seat! lol We've looked at 2007's and down for 4 months. I am not kidding you... every time we went to look at a truck, the lights were all unhooked or not working, the bunks were ragged out, wires all over the place, etc.. I was actually shocked. Do they use that as a sale tactic? "You fix that yourself, and I'll come down $1,000." Give me a break! We needed a truck thats ready for the road with little prep involved. This '95 Pete doesn't look the best, but the bunk was clean and it ran great. It's powered by Cummins with an 18 spd. Its exactly what I think we need for a first time truck owners. Payments will be low and insurance will be reasonable. I've been around trucking all my life, and my husband has been driving over 20 yrs. We both love it!

Fix what you've got if its able to be fixed at a reasonable rate. Just like my husband says, once you get in the truck and learn it, its hard to give it up because you know what you've got. Otherwise, it may be time to check into upgrading.

I am glad to hear that you took your time to find exactly what you wanted to buy. I would expect that you got a good price on your truck. There will always be something that needs attention.

I was going to ask you guys what type of inprovements we could make to this engine while it is all apart. How much would that marine cam cost?? Is there also any different valve settings we can adjust to? What would I be lookin at $$ wise to get this thing to make an extra .5 mpg?

BTW - We are going with the new parts...mech says old are glazed and showing some wear, that I couldnt see...

There was a driver on here who overhauled his engine with a marine cam, better injectors, and a turbo upgrade. I asked him how much the cam was, he didnt have a reciept, couldn't remember... ...guestimated $1300... a new 3406 stock cam will cost about the same, you might as well go with the marine cam they will take your old cam for a core.. you replacing injectors? I'd upgrade those myself also if I was in your shoes.. you can get six reman injectors from cat for about 2500 they're about 550 apiece one at a time. I'd like to try pdi injectors.. Borg Warner turbo 1800.. these things may be more than you want to do.. nothing wrong with going back stock if it saves money.. if your old turbo is good who wants to spend an extra 1800.. same for the injectors..

Well, the turbo was replaced about 3 years ago when I first bought the truck, and I will be taking the injectors to CAT tomorrows to have em flow tested to see if they are all workin good. I would like to do some upgrades, but just cant afford it now. I do know of a guy close by who will reflash my ECM up to 601 HP n 2049 TQ for $800...from the present 475 HP n 1650 TQ. Would this be OK for the stock pistons n rods going in on the inframe job? Would I need a different valve setting? I know it will take some adjustments on driving habits, although I am pretty easy on it now as it is to save fuel. Thoughts on this anyone??

I'm on the Mr Haney bandwagon in here. That's who did my ecm with good results. He has all the old impossible to find pre-emissions files and takes the time to discuss your operation to try and find a suitable flash for your needs. He's also a wealth of information about other questions you have about your rebuild. I know he stays busy answering lots of freebie questions etc and I hate to be one adding to that workload lol. His customer service is top notch. I wish I had the patience from this android phone I'm posting with to go into more details about what I'd do. But really I'm not sure it would be useful. Everybody has different ideas about what they'd do and even different ideas about what costs too much, that kind of thing.. also, I know there are other guys on here who are knowledgeable that do ecm work and freely share info as well..

Although I'm sure its against policy to disagree with a staff member, I will do it anyhow. There's a big difference between buying a million-mile truck that you know nothing about and fixing a truck you have personally owned long enough to pay off. BTW, what truck remarketing business do you work for Allow Me?
