I-95 is smooth sailing until Richmond most days and even then, it’s not always terrible past. I-81 gets rough. Even if there’s not stop and go traffic, it’s usually everyone waiting on one 63mph truck to get out of the left lane. By the time you tough out the mountains and Charlotte, you’re not doing any better than 95 even if you sit in Philly traffic for an hour and a half

Tolls get pricy in NJ, but you can work around em fairly easy and cut it down to be cheaper than the fuel burn on 81

    Used to run 81-77 for years...just really doesn’t work anymore...Better off 95
But like said...Richmond north can get dicey....depending where in Jerzy goin...tolls can be avoided somewhat

    I - 95 North to I - 295 north (Bypass around Richmond) back to I -95 N, to Route 17 North (exit133 Fredericksburg) to I - 66 west ( 30 miles) to I -81 north ( 3 lanes from there ) to I -78 east to NJ. No Tolls - but it adds 115 miles to your trip or 20 additional gallons of fuel @ 6 mpg for a cost of $100 . Running I - 95 to I -295 in New Jersey will cost $116 in tolls

I haven’t driven around there for close to 20 years, but I liked to cut over to US 301 at Richmond and take it up and across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge and back up to I-95 in Delaware.

95 north, in Richmond Virginia, take 295. It is 4 miles longer than 95 but much less traffic. Continue on 95 to the Delaware memorial bridge to 295. Where in New Jersey are you going?

Take 95 all the way to the 104 in va. End of ramp take a left (east) to the 301. Take 301 north all the way to 95 at the nj/deleware line.
That's the way I go when I want to avoid Dc traffic and maryland tolls. Get off 96 at exit 104. Go east to the 301. Then 301/50 all the way to the deleware/nj line.
Not sure of the name of the bridge, but it's not Chesapeake bay bridge.

It is the “Chesapeake Bay Bridge”
    It’s also been honorarily named
“William Preston Lane JR. Memorial Bay Bridge”
But everyone refers to it as The Bay Bridge
And the OP Still hasn’t said Where? In Jerzy
