I have been in some bad storms, snow and rain, some dust. When you trust some of the drivers around you, all driving through the S _ _ T at the same time, and you need to move over or go around for some reason, You will be dam glad other drivers are willing to flash their lights. In the mountains during white outs this can be very helpful as long as you have some trust with the drivers around you. P.S. Trust your self first, do not go back to dispatch, or tell an officer after something happens that it was do to another truck giving you the right of way with their lights.

I have no idea where you drive, but in the rest of the USA four wheelers ignore turn signals :biggrin_25517:

On a side note, realize that the four wheelers may not know what flashing their headlights means. My last trainee was coming up on a LEO on the shoulder so he threw on his left signal to move over. There was a car a little ways back in that lane and they flashed their lights. He took that to mean they were telling him to come on over, but no...they sped up as he started to change lanes. Then, when they came up beside us, they honked their little horn and flipped him off. I was like, "WTF, do they think they are in Europe?"

I suspect that's probably because your definition of 'being blinded' and mine are two totally different things.

When I took driver's ed many years ago, there was a law requiring drivers to flick their highbeams as a warning before attempting a pass on a 2-lane undivided highway (may still be on the books for all I know). So quite likely your trainee mistook the "I'm about to pass you" highbeam flash for the "you're clear to move over" headlight interrupt.

Looks like a part of that law is still on the CA books: http://www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d11/vc21753.htm

Last thing I want in my mirrors is someone elses high beams. I dont even give a courtesy blink when someone flashes their high beams behind me. I just continue to move over and go.

Turning your lights off and back on is much more courteous and professional at night in my opinion. I have discussed this with other drivers and found that its mostly the younger and/or inexperienced drivers who flash their lights.

    So true,.. LOL.

When ever I drive in NYC or anywhere in that vicinity I use the 3 second rule. I put my signal on, count to 3 and start moving over. Trying to wait for someone to let you over simply does not work.
